So a few years ago I decided I would finally get my tattoo that I wanted since high school. It was the letters ETTE on my rib cage. I only got the outline done, and was getting ready to go back in and get it finished, then found out my wife was pregnant. I still have just the outline done of a large font on my ribs. I drew the tattoo up myself and kept changing it until I got it where I liked it.

I still like it, but I'm starting to worry it might be a little too big. I plan on getting it finished, but I don't know if I want to fill it in all black, or shade it somehow. I don't know that I will like bold black letters down my side. Someone once told me it looks like a jail house tat. I don't care what anyone thinks, but it got me thinking that I should probably just get it finished.

I guess my question is, where is a GOOD local tattoo shop? I got the outline done at happy valley when it was in AF. I have been to a few shops, but I don't want some punk kid with little experience working on me! I heard painted temple was good, but they closed or something. I want to get some ideas on what I can do with what I have, then think about it for a couple months before completing it.. Anyone have any good experiences at any local tattoo shops? Who can I talk to that can give me ideas? I'm starting to think maybe I should turn it into a big piece so the letters don't stand out so much.

Lance at Attatude Tattoo just did my wifes back piece (art deco, mucha Lillys), His work is amazing, worth talking to him though he is in Midvale

Painted Temple moved to Sugar House. I think most of Utah's best artist's are in Salt Lake. I'd go to either 27---follow27.com or Painted Temple---paintedtemple.com

Will these guys give me the time of day when I walk into their shops to get ideas? Or do need to set up an appointment?

They'll take good care of you, most of the good artists are booked and you'll have to setup an appointment. You might get lucky and find one of them available for a walk in appt. though

Yeah, you will want to set up an appointment to chat with Lance (unless you get lucky). Just walking in if they are doing a tattoo already they will blow you off (just like they should as they are doing some rather important work on that other person)

I'm personally a fan of Big Deluxe. Rich has done my work, but R2 and a few others do great work as well.

John Chatterlain (sp?) and Vic Back are also pretty phenomenal artists locally, but I'm sure they are booked many months out. They move around studies so much that I can't even remember where they are at currently.

There are quite a few other talented artists locally. My recommendation is to pick the person who makes you feel most comfortable. If an artist doesn't give you the time of day, or tries to push you into something you're not sure about, then look around for someone else.

Vic Back opened his new shop "27" just recently. I would recommend it highly. It's a very clean, classy shop with a cool Japanese atmosphere.

R2 formerly of Big Deluxe is now working there along with Miss Amanda from Lost Art and Pat Devlar from Good Times.
