Teach me about cj Auto trannies

Hey Guys,
I have a friend with a 84 CJ7 and a Automatic transmission...

Needless to say the Auto has died, I don't know anything about them, I don't know the model, is it worth rebuilding, descent replacements, who to rebuild it, etc..

any info would be appreciated...

84 would be the GM TH400 auto. A great tranny, but you can't use an old one out of a Chevy, has to be the Jeep model (a tough find used).

Trans-A-Matic in Magna does great things with them, as do a couple people on here. Rebuilding an Auto isn't that bad, if you want to do it yourself though.

84 should be a Chrysler tranny.

At least in fullsize deals they stopped using GM trannies in 1980.

84 could be one of two options. A TF904 or TF999

Looking through that site it shows the TF 999 behind the inline 6. At least I know what it is. Any recomendations of who to take this thing to?
