Tell me the difference between a marine GM 350 and a car/truck motor

Go.....1979 style if it matters.

Buddy is wanting to swap out his boats motor with a motor out of suburban....I was under the impression that things weren't quite that easy......

easy... they have a balance shaft above the cam that keeps the vibration down in the boat! other than that not much!

Google had some interesting answers. Looks like the rotation could be standard or reverse depending on year model. The marine engine uses "heavy duty" internal components to sustain the higher loads placed on a boat engine. The marine version also has a water-cooled exhaust component not found on the automotive versions.

Soooo.....was I right in telling him that swapping a truck motor in would be a bad idea? :brett:
For as much as I have been around boats and swapping motors in them I can't honesty tell you any real differences. Sure, some have this and that but you can always find one that proves that theory wrong. I do know that we would occasionally swap an automotive engine and it seems those were always the first ones to have issues. We started just sticking with crate marine motors (for out I/Os). We may have just had bad luck and really they may be just fine...but my experience says not to use them.

That's what I was thinking as well. Stick to what it came with, IE a marine motor. Now, hopefully he'll listen ;)

FWIW, I've swapped a couple chev 350s out with truck/car motors and we are in the process of swapping a car 454 in where there used to be a marine 302. So far we have had no problems. Anything that is bolt-on could be different but that old it is unlikelythat the internal parts are different (but still possible). The exhaust is water cooled but the bolt patern will be the same. The block, heads, etc. will be the same as GM/ford would not have different castings for the relatively small quantity of marine engines.
