Terrible Week

Just going to vent here for a minute.

Of course everything that can go wrong can and will go wrong will while I'm deployed in one friggin week.

Right now I'm very grateful for a warranty on my wife's Tahoe and even more so for my dad and for a few guys I work with back home that are taking care of a few things for me.

So I've been working non-stop for 13 days before I finally caught a break today to finally talk to my wife about the problems she was sort of able to communicate to me about. A few days ago the Tahoe started having some serious issues like it would cut out and kick and sputor when she turned. Of course the dealership found everything wrong with it they could which isn't actually a problem because we have a warranty. The list is pretty long but stuff like intake gaskets, exhaust manifold crack, instrument cluster inop, CV boot torn, PS line Leaking and Trans line Leaking. Initial bill came out to about $3500, out of pocket less than $400. Thank you warranty. Now all that crap is fixed.

Next day or two she tells me the Tahoe won't "turn" after what she told me today it sounds like someone installed mis-matched gears. The Tahoe may have not ever hit 4wd since the day we bought. I know I put it in when I test drove it but maybe it didn't engage or something I don't know. Luckily they fixed it and the only money she payed was $101 for some aftermarket wheels and some tires she liked, not sure how she pulled that one off, probably just them trying to make her feel better about them screwing up. Still not sure what the deal is with that one but whatever, the 4wd works and she has good tires, that's what is important right. Young Chevrolet is taking care of her pretty good i guess.

Next day or two I get a message basically saying the roof is leaking but the insurance is going to cover part of it and we will only have to pay 500 ish. Great I think. Until I find out it is still leaking up to 5 gallons a day. My dad is going to come down on Tuesday to fix the leak and fix the drywall and anything else that is wrong with the house. This is a 13 hour drive for him from Oregon.

The Pro's aren't coming until Wednesday to actually remove the swamp cooler and patch the roof. So it's quite a few days of a leaking roof. Up to 5 gallons a day leaking into buckets according to my stubborn wife. I had to get on her to call my boss to get some people out to the house to remove the snow and ice from the roof to stop the leaking. Luckily the Air Force is pretty good about taking care of our families...as long as they know there is a problem and she is a stubborn woman who doesn't want to ask for help. I had to force her.

As we are speaking there should be a couple guys at my house doing everything they can to at least stop the leaking and prevent any further damage. Sounds like there is a bunch of ice and snow on the roof that managed to sneak it's way through the swamp cooler that should have been removed years ago. Hopefully the guys coming over can get the water to stop leaking and when my dad shows up he can get things back to normal, he did build house when I grew up so I have complete confidence in his ability.

I'm probably going to have to have him come down this summer to re-roof the house. Part of me is upset about this but a bigger part of me really likes the idea of spending a week on the roof of my house with my dad, it's been too long since I've spent some good quality time with him.

Well that is all. Not asking for help since it looks like we have things covered. If I feel like we need help in the next day or two I will post something up. Sometime this summer I'll be sure to post up about the roofing deal and see what's what and who can help out or give good quotes and what not.

Ok rant over. This forum is one of the few places I know of that I can rant like this and not catch a bunch of flack, at least as far as online forums go.

If you need a roof sooner, Pelygroso and his crew did an awesome job for me.

Anything we can do to help in the meantime?

Not sure, if they don't send a "real man" by tomorrow I might see what we have going on here. One of the guys that showed up today I happen to know isn't capable of turning a wrench let alone climbing a roof and chipping ice away from the roof.

Keep us posted, I'm sure it sucks to be on the other side of the planet and have problems like this! If you need any helping hands or any kind of assistance, please ask!

I live in Farmington and have military ID so I can get on base if that is where she is... I could take a group of guys in with me and get things fixed for ya if needed... once again just need to know if help is needed...

That sucks Brian, ditto on helping out. I'm off and recovering on sleep on Sundays but also available Monday and Tuesday

Hey now, I'm not that ignorant. :D

Man, that sucks. Let us know how we can help. It sucks enough that you put your life at risk for our freedoms and you can't even take care of your family. Let us know what we can do.

I really appreciate it guys. It's difficult to really stay up on what exactly is going on so as soon as I know more I'll post up.

You guys are awesome. It's really great to know that if I really need the help there are so many on here that I've never even met before on top of all the guys I have that will jump when needed.

we are clearing TONS (literally) of ice off of roofs right now! Make sure that whoever clears off the ice is very careful to not damage the roof underneath. We have also fixed issues from "roofers" doing more damage than good by chipping ice off with the claw end of a hammer, going straight through the shingles and underlayment. We've been installing temporary heat cable and ice melt for a day or 2 before carefully chipping off the ice that's left after that. Let me know if you need another set of eyes on the situation!

Well I had it all wrong I guess.

When I moved into the house 3.5 years ago we had AC installed at which point I shut the water off to the swamp cooler. So at some point between then and now somebody unknown to me decided to turn the water to the swamp cooler back on. I guess the float inside the cooler was stuck open and just allowed the water to continue running. Of course with the awesome temps we have had there was 6 inches of ice inside the cooler. Heat from inside the house melted the ice some every day and there comes the leak.

My wife had someone come out and remove the cooler and patch the roof. My dad was right there to patch damaged drywall on the ceiling, he will spackle it tomorrow so it looks right and all will be back to normal.

He will probably be coming down this spring or summer to help install new floors upstairs as I'm sure there is damage to the flooring where the carpet has been wet for the past week now, the wife wants to get rid of the carpet anyway so sort of a win there. Hopefully he can stick around long enough to help with new roofing as well.

Might hit you guys up again in the spring to learn me on roofing before I head into that one. Luckily I've done a few floors before so that's not a huge deal.

This all of course after the Jeep is taken care of and ready for OSCR.
