TH400 value?

I met a nice high school age young man last night, he came by the house to buy some parts. It turns out, he is converting his truck to a manual transmission, and putting his TH400 up for sale. Lucky me, it happens I have been keeping an eye open for a TH400 transmission, as a possible solution for my YJ build. He doesn't know the history of the transmission, and I didn't check fluid or drive the truck to determine if it was slipping at all. Question for the group. What is a fair value for a TH400 transmission if it's a good core, and fair value if it appears to be in solid shape? Again, he is a high school kid and seems like a respectful young man, so please answer with fair value for both parties. Thanks guys.

Depending on what you plan for transfer case try n get it too, tracking down an adapter and correct spline count can suck, but ya 300 for the trans is fair...

I picked up a used atlas 3.8 (23 spline) last month. I will have to change the input shaft regardless, but your correct, the adapter is another $250 if I go TH400. I already have the adapter if I go with a TH350/700R4.

While we are discussing TH400 transmissions, can anyone answer if full rebuild cost is similar between a TH400/700R4/TH350?

Probably cheaper for the TH350/400 than the 700 but trans shops should be able to put one of those together for you pretty easily

I asked a local transmission shop for a ballpark quote on a full rebuild of a 700r4 and was told $1,200-1,500 does that sound about average? I did not specify if that was in or out of vehicle.

I'm sure that'll make a difference in cost. Carry-in, Carry-out cost. I'm not versed on exactly what current pricing is but I'd for sure call around a little. It's EASY to find a few crooked transmission shops. If you find a good transmission shop, they are worth paying even 10-20% more for solid service rather than getting jerked around.
