I realize this information is all over the net, but most of what I've found has been related to 2wd cars. I want to know how much torque and HP a TH700R4 can handle in a crawler.

My motor produces around 325HP and 420Torque. I have a 1992 TH700R4. I'm running 35-inch tires (may opt for 37" later) with an Atlas 3.8 and 4.56 RP gears. Am I going to need to upgrade it?

thanks!

I am not an expert on trannies but any means but I have had good luck with a late 80's 700r4, post '85 I believe.

I run it with a tune port 350 with a 4 spd altas, 40" tires and 4.56 gears and really like it.

yes I run a cooler on it and I am not the biggest throttle jockey out there but the 3.06 first gear compensates nicely for the 4.56 gears...

I'll be running one on the new buggy but am going through it before final assembly. I hear they can be built tough.

The limit for how much torque and HP a 700R4 will handle depends on how much money you want to put into it. 420 ft lbs of torque is a little high for a stock tranny. With the right upgrades it would be pretty reasonable.

You'll be fine, just run it. You'll never throw down that much torque to the transmission in a crawler anyway. The axles on the other hand better be built to handle the torque multiplication of 1st gear and the transfer case. This is what you need to worry about. The transmission will hold up fine.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
I am very happy with mine. Its behind a 350 TPI and in front of a d300 with 4.88's and 35's. flies down the freeway and crawls great on the trail. I would go any other way. Untill I go full manual reverse pattern, then I'll really be happy.

yes, yes it does. I'm just running a tired old TBI 350 in front of mine, but am quite happy with the trans.
