I still like my gladiator too - are you running the Jeep Nav system? If so, have you paid $99 to update the maps? I just got a letter in the mail trying to sell me map updates ($50 off the normal proce of $150)...

Do you guys have Apple Car Play or Android Auto in the early JT’s? I can’t stand the OEM navigation. I just use the Goog and Gaia through Apple Car Play.

Android Auto, but I don't mind the factory navigation. I should try Gaia though, sounds like a great option.

I'm just not sure how I feel about cutting sheetmetal to make that happen. And how much difference would it make, in the end?

For mine, it's still a truck and I'll leave it as it is. The breakover is at least as challenging as the overhang/departure angle. The JT would need 44-48" tires to really be a trail monster. That necessitates upgraded tons, powerplant change out (not necessary but) and some more armor to an already heavy rig. I'm fine keeping mine to Metal Masher-Poison Spider-Moab Rim type trails as it's ceiling.
