Ok, now I'll anwser seriously. IMHO, Ford was building the better truck durring those years. Both have good engines, no doubt about that. Both manual tranny's were good, but Fords plastic bushings in the clutch linkage blow. As far as autos go, in that era Dodge hadn't learned how to build one yet.

I'd look for the nicest truck you can afford, and not be so swept up in the brand thing.

Get one that has an intercooler, I think they started putting them in the 93's

Intercoolers were installed from mid '91. The intercooled engines made more power than the non-intercooled, but neither made a lot of power in stock form compared to newer '94+ cummins trucks. With the stock engine, the Getrag 5-speed or 518 auto trans will hold up just fine. Be aware that some of the earlier ('89-'90ish) 2wds had a 727 non-OD auto trans. All of the 4wds up to '93 used a NP205 transfercase.

A popular swap is to lose the Getrag for a NV4500. The Getrag doesn't have a stellar reputation, but it's really not that bad.

One other thing, a clean, low mileage, 4wd '92-'93 trucks can often sell for as much as $12k-$13k. You can usually pick up a clean '94-'96 Cummins for less, the '92-'93 trucks are highly desired.

What year did ford start using a turbo? I am looking at a 90 cummins with a 727 auto. It was rebuilt about a year ago. The main reason I was looking at a dodge is I have had a little more to do with them. Thank you for the advice I will redo my search to include all brands.

Is that a bad tranny, or just not desireable because of no OD? Did the 4wd have OD?

It's not a bad trans, it's the lack of the OD gear that makes it undesireable. I believe that ALL automatic 4wd's had OD.
