Being a died in the wool automotive enthusiast, I appreciate all vehicles for what they are. BUT, you cannot compare something like a BMW M3 with a Honda Civic. They are in different classes entirely. Yes, the M3 will eat even a well modified Civic for lunch, but even after putting several thousand dollars into the Civic it'll still be tens of thousands of dollars cheaper than the M3. So while you didn't modify the M3, you still paid for the performance.
Personally I find the modified "ricers" more entertaining that someone who just buys something off the lot and never touches it. The people that take the time to sup up their vehicles, well or not, are typically way more passionate. I'm not saying that people with stock M3's don't love their cars, love driving, etc, but there's a different level of enthusiasm that you see when people take the time to really make there vehicles their own.
