Slumming on e-bay yesterday came upon this Disco.....

Not actively looking for a trail rig, but at its current bid price is not much more than what I would spend for tires (which I need soon) for Monty.

Is it a correct guess that I would probably end up sinking large repair bills into it in the near future?

How would y'all overall rate its set-up?

What size tires can a Disco with 2" lift fit? (undoes my buy a rig instead of tires idea when it needs tires of course....it currently sits on 'mild all-terrian' 245/75R16s according to seller).

Have you ever driven in a disco before?
The main reason I ask is I looked into trading my old truck for one and quickly realized I would be extremely disappointed in one... It felt weird like I was constantly smashed against the door. that being said there are plenty of people who are extremely satisfied with discos and it is a fairly iconic rig.

From what I hear be very sure there has been meticulous maintenance or prepare to run away.

I agree with Paul. When I was between rigs I contemplated a LR Disco. Everyone that I spoke with strongly suggesting running far far away if you do not get all maintenance records produced to you before the sell!

PM/service records aside, i've heard good and bad like anything else.. Iconic for sure, and they are proven worldwide.. Can't deny that.

I looked into an older, high-mileage Range Rover at one time and basically got the answer that it will nickle and dime you to death. I decided to pass, I'd rather wheel a vehicle than work on it. IMO you'll be way better off with an FJ/FZJ80 or a 4Runner.

On a side note Houndoc, i recommend you review the 5-10 threads that you've started in the past year. Read through all the advice that has been shared, and zero in on a vehicle type that would suit your needs.

I would love an FZJ80, no question there. But had no luck selling my Montero, so I can't afford one.

That is the curse of the wheeling being my hobie alone. Extra money goes into the horses and boat the entire family enjoys and I wheel on the scraps that are left over.

So I just keep trolling for something that will work. I think I must agree that an older Rover is a bad choice.

Saw the Rodeo ad on KSL, very interesting expect for it needs tires, which is my issue right now anyway.

Thanks all for putting up with my constant 'should I buy this' threads! I guess one of these days it will be resolved, one way or another.

I've had a disco for the past 4 years and only maintenance issues was redoing the heads at 100,000 miles (preventative), other than that, I've loved it. I think it comes down to what kind of wheelin you want to end up doing with it. If you plan on runnin 31s to 33s, then screw the cherokee!! Unibodies are the devil! The rover stock will go way more places than the jeep. lifts are cheap, there are tons of after-market parts for disco 1s. And they look awesome! I say spend $60 or so to have it looked over and load that sucker up and head out.

If you look hard enough, you can find an older FJ80 that's probably in your price range. After just a bit of looking, we picked up our '92 for $2500. I tossed on a set of used 33" BFG's and have been using the heck out of it! It's very capable, even without lockers. It's not perfect, nor does it have a ton of power or great mileage, but for what we're into it, it works for us.

With the price of fuel these days, alot of people are unloading their older SUV's just to get rid of the gas guzzler. I found ours on the Denver Craigslist. Look around, spend some time searching and I bet you'll come up with plenty of options. Don't be afraid to go out of state for a good deal.
