Okay I'm buiding a rear bumper for my K5 (progress pics are in my sig) Although Rocklogic has been great and I do Like their carrier hinge I'm concerned with the design after hearing stories and seeing failure pics. I don't want to lose a tire on the freeway and have it take out a little Miata or something  So I ask of all you "Offro Engineers" to put on your thinking caps and help me design a tire carrier that allows me haul a tire still open a tailgate and not have to worry about losing it :D

use the RL hinge (or that style) but use two of them. If/When I build a tire carrier for my bros jeep this is what I plan to do.

Look at half the commercial carriers out there. At least the ones for XJs(because thats what I drive) use exactly the same type of spindle and bearing setup that RL sells. IF they were flying off all the time the big comercial builders would not use that design.

I think you are safe just with the one. I did it and I aint skerd

I think this guy sells a double sheer kit for the spindles. He also has a slightly nicer hinge tube than the rockstomper one.

Here's an idea:

I mount my high lift vertically along side my spare tire. It is attached to the swing away by two 1/2" bolts that the jack "I" beam simply slides through. It is then secured by two coupling nuts with a 1/4" rod welded to the end to form a T handle to spin it on and off. I was getting an alarming amount of flex in my tire carrier assembly, and couldn't figure out a good way of shoring the whole thing up. So........I fabbed a quick support arm from my cage that ties into the hi-lift jack up higher, above the edge of my tub. It attaches using the same 1/2" bolt and T handle nut as the other two mounts. It prevents the entire thing from flexing and makes it a lot sturdier. I now have three T nuts to spin off to get to my jack rather than two. Also I have to spin off the top one to open my tire carrier, no biggie.
