Tire choices.

Which tires should I run?

Well, after this last EJS I have really got to thinking. And after taking some photos of Barts buggy I have been somewhat inspired to do something about my beater. Some of you know that I bought a 440 and plan on building it to the tune of about 550 horsepower. This is what really got me thinking. I really like old hot rods and I am going to lower my beater and run a smaller tire. The real question is what tire do I run? I want to stay in the 39" to 42" range but, I will be running them on a 17" beadlock wheel. What do y'all think? The choices are: Maxxis Creppy Crawler, Interco IROK's, BF Goodrich Krawler, and Goodyear Wrangler MT/R. If there is a choice that I am overlooking please tell me.

If you can find stickies in either the Maxxis or the Krawler, buy them. Just don't drive them much on the road. They won't last long. I think your problem will be finding a set. You already have the 17" wheels so that is the first major step.

Creepy Crawlers are sweet if you have the $ for them. Personally I'd probably go Krawler or MTR. Although my next set I am thinking about going with some Pitbull Rockers.

pretty surprised to not see Rockers on your list.

You have to remember....your building a ramcharger not a buggy. You will be driving to and from the trails.

Stickies are sweet. No questions asked. But you will pay twice as much as a Rocker and wear them out twice as fast. Those tires were designed for comp buggies that hardly ever see a normal trail and never see the road.

I still think Rockers are the best choice for you. Remember the 42s are not as wide as the 44s are

Also, no matter how you build the beater its not going to compete with Barts buggy.

Sell your Iroks, buy some Rockers. With the money you saved over not buying stickies.....Get your front and rear suspension done. When you get your suspension done the beater will be unbeleivable. Trust me. No matter what tires you have they dont work when they are not on the ground.

Not sure if they come in that size, but what about Baja Claws?
LOL LOL heck why not thornbird's? why not trxus as well??? :shawn:

keep the irocks until there bald then get something else.
stickies would be nice but there to skinny for ya. it will look like pizza cutters under there and you will not be as stable as you are.

keep the old girl how she is maybe get some softer springs, and on the side build your buggy.

I'm curious as to all the hoopla about the Pitbull Rockers. A good friend of ours has them on his buggy and I find them to be mostly worthless on the rocks. They do great as an aggressive mud tire, but for actual rock crawling, they are so stiff and just never want to hook up. I've only seen this particular set in action though, so maybe it's a fluke.

Could be a fluke, could be lots of things. But I have seen Rockers do amazing things. They seem to come alive at less than 8lbs. But ultimately one has to be happy with their own tire choice. Don't get a tire to be cool. get a tire because it works for you!

2x

my guess is that he's so light (90% of buggys problems) that there not planted so its like he's aired up instead of aired down even tho he is. just my guess.

im 50 50 on the pitbulls...i also have seen them do amazing things...but i have also seen them not work at all on stuff where a smaller m/t did.

i know you NEED to brake them in for them in to work at all....the more i see them perform its starting to look like you need to bake them in every single time before you want to go wheel...one there broken in there broken in for a wile..but let them sit then there not anymore.
if they made a tire that would work for me... i would run the mad dog's... maybe the rocker if i got them CHEAP!!

I did not list Pit Bulls becasue I had listed a other in the poll. I was not as impressed by the Pit Bulls as everyone had talked them up. I watched Corey and the Durango and thought that my IROK's were doing just as well as his Pit Bulls were. It could have been because he was fighting a fuel delievery problem or the fact that he had said he had not aired down yet. As I walked away I remembered that I had not aired down either since Carl filled me back up on the Hells Revenge trail. I talked to Matt from Crawl magazine and he had told me that the new MT/R's were much better than the old ones. Stickies are out of the question as ChestonScout pointed out because I do drive my beater to and from the trails. I know that I cannot duplicate the performance of Barts buggy. I just got the idea to make more of a hot rod type of a vehicle after admiring his tail lights. That and the addition of the much feared 440, at least durring the 60's anyways, I thought that would be cool. Besides I was really wanting a snappy throttle response which is reminicient of the hot rod era (the begining of street racing and later the NHRA). I am not sure if the Ramcharger body will stay or not. We are going to pull the body for all of the drive train changes that are taking place. While watching Bart wheel his buggy I had learned that you don't need to have a monster rig to wheel in Moab. Smaller tires, lower center of gravity, snappy thorttle response, and the right porportions of safety equipment, you have a rig that is unstoppable in the rocks.

Monster rigs seldom work in Moab. Low COG compact rigs with medium wheelbase (100 to 110) seem to be the best choice. Also, from my experience tires bigger than 40" seem to work worse than the 37-40" versions in Moab.

I would rock the creepy crawlers or trepadors. I loved my creepy's and would buy another set in a heart beat (even though the traction they gave caused extreme dana 44 carnage).

If only Creepy's were cheaper, and lasted on the road better....

I may give the Pitbulls a chance, but they're pretty friggin' pricey unless someone's rockin' a deal somewhere... It'll probably be the flawed but affordable Swamper SX's for me, or something more road friendly like the MTR.
