Tire do doo

So, I hear there are like three serious tires one should consider:

However, for one with 17” wheels and already spoiled with 39.5” height, there are a few draw backs:

Maxxis Creepy Crawlers - 40” 600 bucks a pop
BFGoodrich Krawlers – only go to 37”
Interco SX – only go to 36”

So does anyone here have any experience with the true (as far as Interco sites naming goes) the

Super Swamper TSL

It does come in a 39.5 as well as a 42

See Pirates 42” article on this tire

I ran this tire for 4 years and they did ok. The sidewalls seemed weak since I ruined 2 tires. The tread on them seemed to be long lasting. I switched to iroks and the traction is alot better but after just one trip I have more wear then the ones I ran for 4 years.

Who is that masked man?

dumb chart did not show it, but a search shows a blurb about there DOT approved 39 on the same site ... thanks Carl+

Would the BF sidewalls on that 17x39 worry you Carl?

edit ... that chart appears to only show radials ... were the older non-dot approved bias?

Worrying about sidewalls is relative. Krawlers>Iroks and most other mere-mortal tires. Maxxis>Krawlers for the sidewall beef. For that matter, SX's>Krawlers too. I don't think any other Interco tires are as good as the SX's are, probably due to the massive sidewall tread blocks, they tend to deflect things that would normally try to slice sidewalls.

39" Krawlers certainly aren't BAD tires in anyone's book. The only complaint I've heard about them are that they tend to burp air out the beads, so double beadlocks are kinda necessary.

About the radial/bias thing--I was under the impression all Krawlers are radials, but I could certainly be mistaken.

If this is for a strict trail rig, get bias over radial tires. Radials if they puncture, will tear, making repair (even temporary ones) nearly impossible at best. Bias ply tires will puncture and not tear, leaving them even repairable permanently later.

Just my $.02.... ;)

Don't forget that BFG has a new mud terrain that will be available in a 40" on a 17" wheel and a 42 on a 20" wheel. I have a set and I was skeptical at first site, but after using them they are for sure going to be one of the best tires for all around use. They conform to rocks better than any other tire I have ever seen. The tires are launching Sept 1 and should be available right after.

the only Interco's I like are the SX's but for Moab rock I think the BFG's and Maxxis are better tires.

The 40" Maxxis tires are the ****. I bet you can pick up a lightly used comp set for 1500. I loved my creapy crawlers.

based on what I understand about the philosophy of BFG's parent company, I don't think you'll see (or have seen) the Krawler as a bias ply.

That said, a radial tire can still be a radial and have a body ply with an angle in the 80's (pure radial has a 90 degree body ply).

I'm running 39" Krawlers now and I really like 'em. They stick really well to all surfaces that I've driven on, and they flex well. I have had no problems with the sidewall, they have held up really well. Carl is right though, the only drawback is that they do burp air on the inner bead if pressure is lower than 8lbs. They used to not leak when I first mounted them, so I'm going to try some bead glue and reseat em.

P.S. Carl is also right, all Krawlers are radials

I run blue Krawlers and love them. They do burp air and definately seem more succeptable to sidewall damage than my old MTRs did. Light slices but no punctures and have not lost a bead. I bought the warranty from 4wheelparts so for me, the sidewalls are moot.

I will be building my rig for 40s over the winter and have pondered the same question Timp.

Tim's comp compound creepys are awesome! Tim also said that these will be his last set as they were quite expensive to have to replace after one season. We made couple of runs while he was in Utah and they were already showing noticeable wear. He's switching to krawlers when the time comes. Traction was unmatched though. You can buy a regular compound if all else fails. (rumor is maxxis is working on a more affordable black label that will be sticky as well)

For my application, I think Krawlers are the way to go. They can be had new from $1800.00-$2000.00 shipped and offer really good traction and don't wear as quickly.

Anything will be better than swampers:greg:
