Tire questions?

Hey guys I'm trying to decide wich size tire to run on my row rig. 275/65r20 or 305/55r20. Stock is a 265/75r16. What do you guys think the biggest factor for power loss is with bigger tires? Is it the gearing change of the taller tire. The extra weight from larger tires or the extra width causing drag? I like the tall skinny look of the 275/65 and it is lighter then the 305/55 but the 305 has a closer revs per mile to stock. Wich way would you go?

I'm running 285/75r16s on my diesel and have for quite a while. I've been very happy with it. Highway mileage actually went up and it seems to handle better.

Boggie is right. One other thing though, even if you were to go with the same overall dimensions of tire height and width just going to a 20" wheel will make your wheel and tire combo weigh more. This will affect your power and mileage as well.

Damn you pretty 20s. Lt. you say the weight makes a difference but is it the weight or the gear change from the taller tire that makes the bigger difference? I'm trying to pick the lesser of two evils

aluminum is heavier then rubber. so running a 20" wheel compared to a 16" wheel, will give you more parasitic loss.

I have 18" wheels on my F350 and 33" tires. factory was a 34" tire on my truck. I get a little more low end torque which is fine for me. I just use the truck for towing. its not lifted.

The truck currently has 325/60r20 a big 35. So both sizes will be an upgrade. It's good to hear that you can tell a difference between the 34 and 33s. I'm looking for more low end for pulling. I'm thinking the 33s may be the way to go

Sawtooth4x4 is correct. Now, the biggest factor you will see any gains or any losses in will be the overall diameter. Next will be the overall weight of the tire and wheel combo. Weight will make less of a difference once moving but, getting things to move is when you will notice it most. The overall diameter you will see gains or losses weather you are accelerating or all ready moving. The larger diameter will reduce your overall effective gear ratio. I hope that makes sense.
