tire questions

alright, looking at my options for new tires since I killed one yesterday.

Has anyone run either the Cooper Discoverer S/T or Big-O Big Foot X-T?

Thoughts on them? Main questions are tread life, ice/packed snow traction and sidewall strength? Stay on the bead when aired down?

Reason for buying either of those is to get a 255/85R16. If feedback on those tires is poor, will stick with 265/75s in a BFG All-terrian.

FWIW: In all the Big-O tires that have been on cars (I think I've had three vehicles with Big-Os over the years?) when I've bought them, I've yet to have a 'round' set. If you put a quality tire on the car(s), the vehicle magically starts driving 'right' and comfortably.

I'm not a big fan of Big-O brand tires, but there are some good Big-O shops out there.

I had a set of Cooper ATs on my Powerjoke when I bought it. I think the Toyo MTs ride almost as well.

I run Big-O X/T 35/12.5/16.5 on my 91 2500 sierra. Off road they do an excelent job, especially in snow. The ice isn't so good and they wear (on road) like a mud tire (ill probably get 45K out of them) All of this I knew before I bought them so for the $1,000,000 question-would I buy them again? The answer is if I could find a decent Big-O dealer yes. The tires are quality but the service is crap! After they dropped my truck off of the jacks I quit getting the tires rotated and balanced there and since I can't stand to pay to get it done I just rotate in the garage. So.....it doesn't get done as often as it should and the result is shorter life. As far as tire specs go:

pavement-good
dirt-good
mud-great
deep snow-excellent
packed snow-ok
ice-bad
rain(ie resistance to hydroplaning)-excellent when new, decreases below 50% tread
rocks-good

I know a lot of people on here will disagree but I really like my truxas mt's they handle great on and off road. They are a lot quieter than my bfg at's. I had one that needed a little extra weight to get balanced but I think they are great tires.

Maxxis Bighorns come in that size. Lots of people around here are happily running them. I have a set ready to go on the snowflake, but since it's far from done, I haven't run them yet. I have run various Maxxis tires on various trail and competition rigs over the last several years and have loved every single set. :)

There is one ebay seller advertising that size. With shipping you're at about $985 for four.

I would contact some of the other sellers on ebay selling Maxxis bighorns for excellent prices, like these:

and see if they can get your size for a similar price. I bet they can.

Any thoughts with the Mxxis or Truxas on wear? I have been very surprised in that regard with my BFGs (59k, and counting, even with some extra rubber left on the rocks).
