I had my Jeep down at Clegg's in Spanish Fork, and the tranny is going out in the TJ.

Have any of you heard of swapping trannys for aw4 out of an XJ? what issues are there? like driveshaft lengths, wiring etc.. I would like to go that route if I have to spend the money anyways... I know you have to get a shifter, brake pedal, torque converter etc... What are your experiences with reliability etc...

thanks

I did the AW4 swap about two years ago. It was one of my favorite upgrades so far. I just followed the details from Stu here

I bought all the needed Jeep parts from Jarred at Doug Smith Jeep, and my tranny and used parts from South Bountiful Auto.

You will need a wiring harness from an Auto TJ of the same year as yours (so that it has the trans computer) and a flywheel from an I6 auto. Also you will have to run an auxillary trans cooler as your radiator will not have hookups for the OEM style cooler. You will need a new crossmember from a TJ w/ an AW4.

Swap out the wiring harnesses, and pull your clutch&flexplate and put on the flywheel. Hook up the Crankshaft Position Sensor on the bellhousing of the trans, and bolt up the x-fer case.. You will definately need a slip-yoke-eliminator as your rear driveshaft will be considerably shorter, and even with the SYE, if you are running quite a bit of lift you will have driveshaft issues. However your front driveshaft will be longer.

-You will need a new input shaft as well, Here is a link about an auto to manual swap. I know its backwards of what you want to do but it will have the same problems.

-And as far as brake pedal you can use the one you have now. Just take off the clutch pedal..

-Fuel mileage will drop a little bit the the auto trans as well...

No such thing, auto tranny that came in the tj was a three speed tf999

I've had my eye on this swap since the day I picked up our TJ (3 years ago?). It'll happen, one day....

As far as a wiring harness you must make one and splice into the factory TJ harness.

I would recommend a separate tranny cooler anyway. I bought an auto TJ radiator and it will not keep the tranny anywhere near cool enough unless moving at road speeds.

There is no cross member to deal with. You will have to fab a tranny mount. I used the stock TJ style mount and machined an aluminum adapter to fit into the stock holes in the stock TJ skid plate.

In my application (AW4 + Atlas II) I was an inch longer than the 5 speed and stock t-case. I did a new drive shaft due to the Atlas install anyway.

In some cases you may need to shorten the output on the tranny or use a 1" spacer that Advances Adapters makes.

With out the ability to clock the t-case (as the Atlas or STaK have) you will need to re drill the tranny tail housing to clock the t-case to it's original position. The XJ has the t-case rotated down 10 degrees I believe.

The brake peddle is not too expensive through Jeep. T just makes for a cleaner swap. My TJ still looks factory under the dash and hood.

I will just recommended spending some time on Stu's website he has some great information there. It should answer any questions you may have.

I'm not trying to be an ass here, just posting some more info I have.

I just talked to Wayne at Teraflexplus. He said that I would be better off with the T999 than with the AW4. (less driveshaft stuff and computer stuff), and is basically a direct swap. Any of you done that?

The AW4 is a very durable tranny. It was used in alot of applications one of which was the second gen Supra turbo.

The wiring was not that big of a deal. Sure it takes sme time but it will be worth it. It is self adjusting to your driving style. This is 2009 we use electronics now.

Have to agree here. You can DD a non-OD trans with good results. Gear your axles for the highway and the Tcase for the trail. (<33"s =3.73s & 33"+ = 4.10s)

You can also wire the TC for manual lockup.

Has anyone done nv3500-nsg370 swap? Is it basically a direct bolt-on? ex: can I use the same clutch etc? Just about three months ago I replaced the clutch and slave cylinder..

So basically all I would need to do is bolt it on? I guess I would need to change or move the CPS right? Lol I should probably just call you...
