tj rear axle options

Jinx

when in doubt, upgrade!
Location
So Jordan, Utah
I have a buddy with a trashed D35 from a 97 tj,

Would really like to upgrade, so looking for cheapest options/hook ups.

gears and such aren't a big problem, but we haven't done the brackets and such before... (ie taking axle from something else with out coils and putting the brackets on so it will work)

What do you guys think???
what works what doesn't?
who do we know?

the quickest easiest for you guys may be to find a D44 from another TJ but plan to spend around $1000 for it...however you could have a shop like Rocklogic or Anarchy setup a D44 with the brackets etc...you can find rear D44s for <$100 then you need to either buy the brackets and pay a shop to set them up or just have the shop do all the work...having one of the shops do the work will probably be the cheapest and you get a true D44 but also may take the longest;)

I would tend to think the same thing. SukaB how much to put the brackets on? I can come up with the axle, Can we use the brackets off the original D35?

Knowing you, you probably have a Kick A$$ upgrade that will work better than the stock stuff.

is a scout 44 a good place to start? Can you change the lug pattern?

I know Suka has done a bunch of TJs with the scout rear and he does have the shafts redrilled to match the stock pattern. I think it would be more work than its worth to try and reuse the stock brackets. I'd give him a call and see what he would charge as he may overlook this thread.

Suka is by far the person to go to. I got a new rubicon rear 44 housing off jeepsareus.com for $525 shipped and will have Suka do the gears and locker, so this is an option too.

Call me or pm me and well crunch some numbers..
I really like putting the scout rear in, their strong and have alot of options..
Disc brakes or stock big drums, custom setup pinion angles, heavy duty brackets, high clearance brackets, Good shafts, heavy tubes, thick covers, easy track width change and so on..
There's a bunch of guys with this option in the TJ's and YJ's on this board that we have completed..
We just finished two in the last month or so..

If you have a stock rear 44 tj axle from the dealer it is all wrong after you do lift and all the other things to it..binding trac bar bracket and curved rear springs, maxed out adjustable arms, shock mounts that damage shocks due to pinion angle changes, low hanging brackets, bad robot welds, small drum brakes, thin cover, bla bla bla...
You get the point!
Check out one of our Tj's with it on and you'll be amazed how nice it is...
There's a pic of one on our website as well.

I have to agree with Suka. I put a Scout 44 in the rear of my YJ. Oh, I'm loving it.

The first thing I noticed after I installed it is how quickly I can stop. The 44's brake shoes were worn out extremely bad and need a replacement, but... They definetly exceed what the stock YJ D35's brakes did.

I had to put wheel spacers on mine so it would be wide enough to fit the tires on. My 33x12.50's are almost completely covered by the stock flares in the rear. When I flex, the tire usually rubs on the frame a bit.

Not to mention that I am not worried about breaking a shaft now. Especially since I've got Moser shafts in the 44.

thanks all,
SukaB, I will round up my friend and try to set up a time to come and see you.

He works way too much so it might be a little while but the info is much appreciated. :suka:
