You don't need a catylic converter to pass the safety portion, and since you don't have emission testing in the basin yet, you should be in the clear.

A couple things to keep in mind though. Testing is headed your way, and you won't pass without it. Also, when you go to sell it, your truck is illegal for most of us so it could hurt your resale value. If I were you I'd keep an eye open for a cheap used converter, and snag it for future use.

I was wondering if I need catelic convertors to get it pass safty on a 1986 suburban

My 86 3/4 ton Suburban came w/ a dual wrapped (?) High temp exhaust that works like a catalytic converter. Shops here were telling me I needed them until I found out that mine came w/o them.

A buddy has the 6.2 diesel and likes it, he is a diesel mechanic and has managed to average 16-18mpg with a few tweaks. His next step is going to be to either turbocharge the 6.2 or drop in a 6.5 from the Hummer H1.

That's cool I'm going to be taking out the 350 and putting in a 502 h.o off road engine that's putting out 450 hp and 550 lbs of torque

A tuned 6.2 or 6.5 diesel with the turbo pumps out the same power but achieves close to 20mpg, and the 6.5 can be had for cheap at government auctions. Just putting the idea out there.

You have to do a metric sh*tton of work to a 6.2/6.5 to get those kind of numbers.... they're great with a Banks kit for cruising around, but a big block is a way cheaper method to get real power. For what you'd have to spend on that beefed up 6liter, you could have a Cummins and turn up the pump. Seriously.
