Im considering selling the one tons (they are listed) to buy a set of steering Rockwells for the Scout.

The one tons are built great and PLENTY stout for the Scout. Basically I think rear steer would be fun and as a bonus....I could be part of the cool Rockwell crowd.

I think I might have an illness. Something doesnt feel right if I dont have some big project going on the Scout.

So heres a poll to help me decide.

Thanks for looking!

don't see poll.....

My opinion anyways: Get it dialed in how it is now, and flog the ever-living mothfukle crap out of it! Just go have fun, and you will prolly be amazed the places it will go. The pitbulls are great, the black box gets you low enuff, and everything is stout. beat it hard!!!

I just bought some 42's with that same thought, to go bigger. (linked 1 tons. etc.) But I decided to sell them because I have had so much fun with the little 38"s it has now. Looking back, I wheeled the piss out of the 4 runner this summer. We went almost every week and did everything from scenic trails to upper hell, and everything in between. From Utah to Montana, we flat out had a blast!!!!!! is getting 42"s and 1 ton's going to make the runner THAT much better for the money spent? probably not. So just gunna spend the winter cleaning and tightening and adjusting and beat the shiit out of it again next year. The money saved will help me get to colorado to 21 rd and billings and Rangley

dial it in, and go have fun......IMO

Hey Bro, I don't want to bust your chops or anything but, if it was me and my money I would spend it else where. The axles you have are already plenty stout. I think that was your words. If you have the engine working like it should then why not leave it alone? Take that pretty wife of yours on a vacation to a place she would like. You know, somewhere tropical. Scantly clad beauties walking around, beaches, water skiing, whatever. If you are really aching to turn some wrenches then perhaps some full width axles under the jeep are in order. I guess what I am saying is that if it ain't broke then don't fix it. Rockwells really are nothing but a pain in the backside. Noisy, cumbersome, HEAVY, and they don't turn worth anything. Why would you want to take steps backwards? Never mind that fact that your drive ability is shot. I can't think of a single reason why anybody would want those boat anchors under their rig. I would give some parts of my anotomy for your rig!

After all my rig turnovers and builds I've decided I'm nutz and wished I'd kept a few of them and just wheeled them. Minor adjustments maybe, but familiarity with a rig is half the battle. I watched Peter Wells wheel his rig year after year, when everyone else was changing and technology was progressing, and he was competitive for a long time. Even won XRRA a time or two with a well used and abused rig. Just my opinion, but whatever you do, don't scrap it and start again.

That most definatally would be the smart thing to do. I have never been accused of that blessing!

basically im getting enough out of the one tons to do everything to the rocks so it shouldnt cost me dang near anything.

Mikes Toyota in Moab kind of got to me. True i could go anywhere that he could. He just made it look a lot cooler and easier. Ive been a fan of rear steer for a long time. Ive had dreams of converting the 14 bolt to a steering axle but that would cost some $$$

Rockwells are cool, but...

1. Heavy
2. Heavy
3. not paid for
4. will cost a LOT if you 'build' them to the hilt
5. need more lift maybe
6. 44+" or it's not even worth it, and then you need wheelbase anyway.

If I had the axles you've got, I'd keep them and carry on. Then again, the Trailmobile Scout I'm looking at in this old issue of Crawl in front of me is pretty sweet..... but I still wouldn't if I were you.

I voted no. :D

DO IT!
If you have the itch and you know you love to build, do it.
Selling the tons will get you more than enough green to build the Rocks.
Rockwells are not nearly as expensive as 1 tons.
Streetability doesn't sound like it's much of an issue for you anyways.

then again if you want to wheel now just leave it alone.

RW's are big, heavy, ugly and kill your clearance under the axle....I am not sure of the exact #'s but I would bet your 14b has more clearance with your 44's than a RW would have with 47's....I KNOW it does under the tubes.
Rear stear is ok, but even the majority of comp guys went away from it....too many things to do and think about. Like Bart said, get comfy with your rig and drive it!! (Yea I tend to tinker too much too)

44s v. 47s = +1.5" at the axle
rocks v. 60 = -.75 at the axle
total gain at teh axle = .75"

Not really worth it for the cost/hassle, if you ask me.

Shaving the Rockwells ($300 option, at least) gives you a LOT of clearance at the differential.... but you also lose so much up above the differential.

Not worth it, if you're running built 60's like those. :D

plus, it's so hard to get low COG with rockwells. I've never seen a rig with rockwells, or even tires 42+ or bigger, that was as capable or more capable than a rig with 60's on 40's. this isn't big tire country.

I almost went with rocks, just for the big tire factor, but I'm glad I did not. You almost have to run 47 and up to make it worth it in the end. I decided to just go the one ton route and get sticky tires. They will take me places rocks and 47's won't. Rear steer is cool to tinker with, but I already have a rear 14b/d70 rear steer in my head for that. The clearence does rule on the rocks once you mohawk them, plus 47 spline 4340 2.0 inch shafts are sexy:D

I'm a Rockwell fan (obviously). They are fully mean! With that being said, the axles that you currently have are also fully mean. In your situation, I'd definitely keep them.

I voted Rockwell, simply because I don't want to agree with Carl. :cody:
