Today's weird question

Has anyone on here ever dislocated their jaw or had any jaw type issues? My jaw on the passenger side has been hurting like none other for the past few weeks and today when I couldn't get my mouth open wide enough for my corn bread at lunch, it occured to me that there may be a problem.

It's mostly fine if I don't open my mouth very wide, but once I do, the joint connectikazod really hurts. I think a visit to the ole Chiropractor is in order, but I was just curious if anyone has suffered from a similar issue.

If I open up all the way it is screwed for days. After denstists visits, its screwed up for a week. I just refrain from opening up all the way.

Mine pops out every once in a while, make it painful to eat.
It will usually go back in a few hours but it has taken a couple of day's once or twice.
I chew a big wad of bubble gum and that will normally fix it.:D

Mine would get caught sometimes when I'd try to open it, and I'd have to move my jaw sideways to get it to "unlock" far enough to eat or whatever. It would also get locked open, more rarely. Then I got hit in the jaw playing basketball, and I think it got dislocated--I had to move it with my hand to put it back straight. After that I went to a jaw-specialist doctor, since it was causing me headaches and facial pain.

He molded a mouthpiece to keep my teeth aligned, after a few weeks of that he ground my teeth to get them straighter when closed, and gave me some techniques for how to stay relaxed (I ground my teeth while sleeping), and some ways to keep my jaw aligned while awake, too. After all that, I don't really have any problems any more--although Carl tells me I still do grind my teeth sometimes.

MANDY???? Is that you??? It's awfully good to see you on here instead of just lurking over Carl's shoulder....:D I remember you telling me that you had dislocated your jaw, but I didn't realize you could actually move it with your hand. I'm going to go with mine is NOT dislocated then because I can't move it with my hand. It just really hurts and I'm a giant pansy, so it's a bad combination. Plus, it's starting to interfer with my favorite past time of eating and that is plain awkward. I'm hoping to come into some money towards the end of the week so I'll probably make the trek to the Chiropractor office and see what he can do for me since doing nothing hasn't fixed anything.

Go get a cheap mouth guard. I have a $8,000 jaw thanks to a semi using my car as a hockey puck. I have severe TMJ issues ever since and a mouth guard relieves the pressure while you are sleeping. You can get cheap ones for like $20.00 at walmart and if that helps you might consider getting one that is custom fit. Ever since the accident I have to wear mine every night or I get bad aches throughout my jaw and into my temples.

Yep, same deal as Mandy pretty much. But mine got bad enough I had to have surgery to clean out the cartilage/calcium build up and pop it back in. I can not open very wide anymore. The other side still pops some times and it gets real sore if I chew gum or anything super chewy....
I have trained myself to slep with my tongue between my teeth. I never could sleep well with the guard in.

I have TMJ also, and when i was younger (12-15) it would randomly lock down and I couldn't open it more than enough to fit in a straw. really painful too. I guess I got lucky and just grew out of it. I never open my mouth all the way anymore because when I do my jaw pops and I feel a weird tension back there when I start to close it like my jaw is deciding whether to fall back into place or pop off it's hinges. kinda scary. Hate the dentist for that reason!

Only when opening? Can you close it all the way to clenched teeth without it hurting? I get inner ear infections that the only way I know they are coming is my jaw gets sore and painful to open and close. Just a possibility.

My wife has TMJ. She's had a couple of teeth removed and is currently a "brace-face" as they redo her bite. Apparently this a degenerative joint disease that will not get much better (if any). She's got about one more year with the braces.

The theory is that she clenched her teeth while she rolled her ZJ at 60 mph and the impact "could" have caused the problem. It's also compounded by chewing. You don't need to chew...

I must admit to feeling quite privileged that her first post was to me. :greg:
This is the part that I find awesome, that you refer driver and passenger instead of right and left. simply wonderful, can my wife hang out with you for awhile.
Absolutely, but I must warn you that I'm known for being a horrendous influence on wives. Just ask Chadrick. ;)

That is a darn good point. I need to lose a little weight before summer anyways.....

I can chew okay and still chew gum, it's just when I yawn or have to open my mouth wide enough to get a bite of food in that it hurts like the dickens. And for those of you who are wondering, the dickens hurt!! -_-

My wife has TMJ... her jaw makes scary noises when she yawns... it usually makes me shudder when she yawns, can be heard across the room. Her doc said no gum, and no chewing straws. Her's also started in a car accident when she was 16, so nothing to do from insurance now.

I occasionally will stick my lower jaw out bulldog style... mostly when I'm swearing under my breath, so mostly when I work on a vehicle, and especially when it's my jeep. It takes a couple of days to get the soreness to go away, and I don't even know I'm doing it at the time.

That is funny, huh.:) I guess I haven't made time to visit RME, but only when Carl is. I didn't even realize that it had been that long.

And Carl was just making fun of me today for that being my first post.

Mine would always do that too when I would eat. The doctor that I saw helped me with a way to hold my mouth. I put my tongue on the roof of my mouth right behind my front teeth, then I line up my front teeth so they are touching, then I open my teeth so that none of my teeth are touching and that is how I'm suppose to hold my mouth all of the time. I'm use to it now, but it use to be a huge pain in the mouth, ha. I know not that funny. I think the way I hold my mouth and everything in it has helped me a ton. HTH
