Thinking about retiring the 96 3/4 ton Suburban. It has a 454. 128k miles. I have liked the Suburban. I thought about finding a newer 3/4 ton Suburban, but I wonder if I should check out the Excursion with a Powerstroke?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

If you don't mind the price difference, I'd go with the Powerstroke. I recently bought a F*rd over a GM (having had GM stuff all my life) and have been pretty satisfied.

I went from a Suburban to a crew cab pickup, though. For my family (wife and 3 kids) it works great.

I really, REALLY hate to say this, but if you can, get the... oh I can't say it.. get... the...EXCURSION!

Man did that hurt. Diesel is just mo' betta for towing.

My wife is driving MBryson's old Burb, with the 35's and everything. She likes it ok, but it doesn't get great mileage running around town.

i have worked at a well established diesel shop for the last while. and the owner was a die hard ford fan and he admits that his 6.0 powerstroke excursion is problem prone. he says there is no way in heck he'll own it out of warranty. if it was me i would go for the gas burban. or try and find the older 7.3 excursion. the older 7.3 is still not the best motor, but it is far better then the 6.0. but hey, in the end you'll drive it everyday, not me. so get which ever one you like more :) now i know that what i have said is gonna get me flamed but i am just giving my oppinion.

I had heard (I think previously on the board, I will try to find the thread) and on TrailerBoats about towing/vehicle control problems with the Excursion.........

 I've heard similar about my crew cab PSD (it's the lightly sprung 'light' duty F250--from what I know, the same as the Excursion) and it's by far the best tow rig I've ever owned. Suburban, pickup or whatever (yes, even better for towing than my Cherokee :D--but just a little).

Chevy motors are still in the 70's. the pushrods make me angrey, my friends burban has the 8.1 and it is gutless compaired to the Nissan Armada which only has a 5.6 V8. DOHC's make all the differance.

Drive them if you don't belive me.

Whatever....... I've not seen a SOHC or DOHC motor make power where a pushrod motor does (low in the RPM range). They're cheap too............

Ring and pinion gears are in the 20's or so. Does that make them obsolete?
