tow rig ?

Okay I am getting ready to start looking for a tow rig and I think I found one. My question is should I keep looking for a suto since the one I found is a 4 speed? Oh it is a 84 f250 ext cab with a 351 in it. It also has the controls for trailer brakes.

Personally, I prefer the manual.

The 4speed will be very reliable. Should be a np435. I prefer the stick. I would however look for a 460 or even better yet a 300ci strait six. I have towed with all three and the 351 is not that great. Gas mileage with the 351 is surprisingly not much better than the big block. The 300 is my all time favorite gasoline truck engine.

I was going to say.. .that 351 will get a workout.... It's be ok, but kind of dogs uphill.

300's are dogs too, but they run forever. I have nothing bad to say about them. :D And I really don't like Ford's, so that's saying somethin'.

Want to buy my dually????? :D :D

okay what do you mean a dog up hills? I pulled my jeep down to Richfield with my v6 dakota. It did okay but on the hills I slowed down real low.

Wife says no to a dually so if she is okay with me getting something I should get something is okay with.

By "dog" I mean: will pull stuff, but slowly and unhappily. Then again, I was towing about 8k, in an extended cab F250, through the Rockies. Not sure anything un-diesel would like that much. :D

My truck is too big! and too much money for your wife. :D I stopped by today, btw. Where were ya???

I used to tow with an '85 F250 with the 351 and a manual. It got me where I needed to go, but i would agree with everything the others have posted. It was a dog going uphill...8mpg was the best I ever got towing...empty wasn't much better.

Still, I really liked driving that truck. Seven years after selling it, my wife still misses it and brings it up all the time. I don't know if you could do much better for $1500, unless you were able to find a 460.

Pretty sure it is going to be carbed. My '85 had a carb. I believe '86 or '87 was the frist year of fuel injection for F250's.

What is your current truck??

I think you would definitely feel more secure pulling with a 3/4 ton than you would with the Dakota. Those around you would probably feel a little safer as well. I would consider it an upgrade.

That's downright impressive....(I don't think my Powerjoke could do that even towing a tent trailer--it'd only get about 14 mpg)
