Towing with a Bronco/Blazer

I sold the Stroker to buy the Jeep and now I'm looking for another tow rig/ daily driver. Anyone tow much with a fullsize Bronco or Blazer? Would probably only tow to Moab 2 or 3 times a year. I need to tow an Unlimited on a car hauler and I want to weigh my options. Any websites I could check for info such as towing capacity on older vehicles? Thanks.

You'd be alright with a TJ and a light trailer. I've pulled a full size truck with my 3/4 ton'd Ramcharger... it wasn't very fun. It has plenty of suspension and power (300+HP 340) but a short wheelbase is not ideal for towing much weight.

I've done it... pulled a 7K house trailer w/ load dist. hitch with a 77 K5 stock suspension and 31" tires, SB400. Plenty of power, but as mentioned the wheelbase makes the nose really light. You can help it with the load hitch, and airbags (I didn't know what airbags were at this time), but it still isn't fun. I'm much happer pulling with a bigger truck.

I figured wheelbase would be the limiting factor. With a equalizer hitch and airbags what would be the next factor?

I'd say 1/2 ton brakes... just make sure yours are in great shape & the rotors aren't glazed or too thin. It's easy to get a trailer moving, but how well can you stop quickly if you had to?

Does anyone know the wheelbase of a Blazer off the top of their head? I know my reg cab short bed Dodge was 118 and it towed ok other than the 35"s and 3.50 gears.

On another website it shows the wheelbase to be 106.5 inches.
I tow my 20Ft flatbed and a CJ-5 with my '88 all the time. I do use a Equalizer and I have trailer brakes. I like my 3/4 ton pickup better, but the Jimmy does just fine.

I think it's 106". Maybe it's 108"?

www.coloradok5.com will have a LOT of answers (if you don't have to pay to search--but there's always google.com advanced search if you do)

I think you could get away with lower speed towing a rig on a trailer with a Bronco/Blazer/RamCharger. You get much over 65 and things can get a little dicey. Admitedly, I've considered it more than once (and you've made me consider it again). It'd be nice to have a decent trail vehicle towing my extremish trail vehicle and they'd both have the same powertrain.

Greg brings up an excellent point with the brakes. Get a good brake controller and an EQ hitch and that'll make things that much better. It's not going to be a turbo diesel, long bed, dually, but then again you don't expect it to be.

Yeah, I really miss my 04 Stroker but it had to go to fund the Jeep. I'm not worried about the power or the brakes (both will be addressed) a tow controller, equalizer, and air bags would be added. Safety is my real concern though. I like the seating capacity versus a reg cag pickup and being able to take the top off is fun in the summer. Looks like I'll be looking for a new rig this summer :greg: I'll probably be looking for a 91-95 Bronco though because the Blazer didn't have a removable top in the years I'm looking at. Anything I should know about or stay away from?

There's nothing wrong with the '88-91 K5 (except the rear diff). Dead nuts simple, quite reliable and availability of parts are second to none.

I've towed with one off and on. My only complaint is the short wheelbase and the ride inside the rig. Just spoiled on the ride thing.

Blazer 108" Ramcharger is 106" (I think) Bronco (who cares)

You'll be fine pulling a TJ as long as the trailer isn't real heavy. I've got a 18' x 8' wheeler trailer (2,200lbs) that I've pulled a LOT with said Ramcharger with up to 4 800lb atv's on it... pulled like a dream. I also pulled it a bunch with an '88 K5 that was also 3/4 ton'd

What year are you looking at? Blazers had a removable top up until they rounded them in early '90 something

I agree. I have a 9.5" GM 14 bolt to put in mine, and I am lifting it etc.
This is it:

I paid $500 and installed some 10" wheels and 32's. It has been a great rig so far.

Spend $100 and get a real 14bolt
