i have a 85xj with the 2.bL and a 5spd manual 31" tires and 3.73 gears. i was wondering how it would do towing a toyota pickup(77) with a tow bar. im thinking of makeing a crawler but want to know if i can tow one first. any advise would help. thanks.

I would strongly suggest against it. the truck weighs as much as the XJ does so it will push the XJ all over the place, especially considering with a flat towing setup you dont have brakes on the vehicle being towed so your little tiny brakes on your XJ have to do all the stopping.

I flat towed a YJ out to Little Moab once with my XJ......that's never ever going to happen again! Talk about scary!
Usually the rule of thumb is that if the vehicle doesn't have the power to get itself over a hill at a reasonable speed, it probably isn't going to pull something else up said hill reasonably.
I towed with a v8 grand cherokee which is longer, heavier, and much more powerful. I had 10000 lb load distribution, sway control, electric brakes, etc. All I learned is that I'll never do it again.

I towed the Bronco on the trailer with the XJ once....from All Terrian Auto to home....I thought I was going to have to put it in 4 low to get up 4500 South

Don't tow anything heavier than a small pop-up trailer with an XJ.

I flat towed a 4000 lb. jeep with a 7000 lb. 1 ton truck. It really surprised me how much braking power I lost. The brakes on my truck got a little hot just driving it around town.

2.8 and manual are the totally wrong tow set ups. I did a little towing of 22 foot boat (4500 or so pounds) when I had my xj without trouble, but it was 4.0, automatic and good trailer brakes.

I towed an 85 toyota pickup on a dolly with my 97 XJ w/ 4.0/auto from Sandy to Cedar City ...it wasn't that bad, just didn't have much power or brakes. I did it at night so traffis wasn't too bad ...I was going 45 up some of the hills, but wasn't pushing it as hard as I could have.

Well sort of....took about a month or so after that....I think it was pulling the empty trailer home from Vegas in 100+ temps that really started the motor troubles :-\

like is often said, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. If for whatever reason you had to stop quick or do a quick manuever you would have prolly not faired too well. In 2001, the XJs towing capacity was only 5500 but thats with a weight distro hitch and load stablizers (similar to Cody's setup with his Grand), with the 2.8L I am sure its MUCH lower than that. I towed three four-wheelers with my 01 and it was scarry to say the least (and I have towed quite a bit) and I know a Toy pick-up weighs a ton more than three four-wheelers.
