Toyota Airbags

I have a Tacoma that the air bag light comes on and stays on until you turn the key off and back on then it goes away. It has done this for 1 1/2 years and finally it just stays on now. The dealer wants too much to check it out and the owners manual say to get it checked out immediately. If I left it alone would it cause other problems besides the air bags not working in a crash? Any ideas what to check to find out whats going on?
Thanks

since no one else replied I will. The light is telling you that something in the air bag system is not working. Some times is has to do with the air bag itself. Not only could it not work in a crash but sometimes it is possible to go off just for the hell of it. I would go to a local auto repair shop. Most repair shop can find out what with it for a lot less then the dealer. Hope this helps you or at least it will start some other replies :-\

Might be worth going somewhere to have the codes checked and cleared. I think Autozone will clear the codes with their scanner. Might be a cheap place to start anyway.

There's no way in hell that it will go off my itself...unless 2 arming sensors are activated at the same time. Airbags don't just "go off" for the hell of it. There are many failsafes built into the system.

a kid I knew in high school, his dad had one go off in his face for absolutely no reason...it was in a ford though, they sued and won a multi million dollar suit...I know this story sounds far fetched and I didn;t believe it either till the kid came to school in a brand new Superduty...it was then very apparent his parents had come into a large sum of money...before he was driving an old (like 85 or 86 honda), a big change...

This is very very very unusual. Obviously, if they won a multi million dollar suit...

Thanks for the sugestions. I went to checker and rented a code reader which they said would work on Toyotas but it did not have the cable to connect. I will have to try autozone. I pm'd dbtech01 to find out if all it will take is a code reader to locate the problem. Knowing my luck I will have the stupid thing go off when I am on I-15, but that would be cool if I can get a million dollars also. :)
