Toyota Electric Locker

So teach me a little about the different options and where's the best place to find one (used or new)? I noticed you can get a high pinion diff, since this is a rear axle it'll be going in would it be worth it in the rear to have the HP? I would love to have a HP but I don't know if the Toy HP would be able to live in a rear axle???

So teach me about the different choices I have (TRD, HP, etc) which is best and why??? Why do guys offer to sell them without the motor? Don't you need the motor if you want to engage it? Also, if you know where to get a used one for a good deal let me know :D

I assume your interested in the 8" varieties?

The HP is from the front of a 93'-97' Landcruiser, I don't think it showed up elsewhere in the US.

The LP can come from a TRD Tacoma or 4Runner, to my knowledge they should all be low pinion... Years should be 96'-current (though the TRD package didn't appear til' 97', they were an option in 96', mabey late 95' too).

I've heard that the newest generation (05'+) of TRD lockers use a 30 spline pinion flange, I haven't verified this myself but this could make regearing an issue...

I've heard you can get a cable to engauge & disengauge the locker, rather than use the electric motor. That may be why people are selling them w/o the motor. I see no reason to swap out the elec. motor though, mine has worked flawlessly in the short time I've had it.

The best place to find them? I found mine as a complete axle on here for $400 which is a steal, IMO. Keep an eye out of the Toyota forums (Marlin Crawler has a pretty big forum).

Toyota has OEM cable lockers... though I don't know if they were ever available in the 8"... just the LC 9.5"

I know Downey has a cable conversion for the LC E-lockers, I'm sure there is something similar for the LP TRD locker too?

The solenoid motor is usually the thing that fails (usually when never used, full of water, etc...) Its not that common to hear of them failing. That could by why you seen the for sale less the solenoid?

you tell me :D

I'm curious about the HP ones because I can get brand new (LP and HP) for the same price. If I buy new would it be worth it to go with the HP?

I've been watching some of the toy forums (Marlin, TTORA, etc) and everytime I see them they have already been sold :( I'm watching though :p

Oh yeah, they are still available new from the dealership too... Olly and I installed a brand new set of E-locked 3rds right from the dealership into a customers 80 Series... All of the OEM LC cable lockers that I know of came right from the dealership too

Also, don't be afraid of "a bad solenoid" I have repaired mine a couple time when it stops working. They are easy to pull apart and clean. Usually, they just need to be cleaned and regreased and they work great.
