90 and 91 were available with either the 2.4L 4cyl 22RE, or the 3.0L V6 3VZE. (assuming we're talking 4WD's here...)

Jeremy,
come on, I have to say that's a fair question. I know jack about toyotas, and I've heard that the 22RE is a good engine, but I have never heard spank about the V6. Seems to me, that the V6 could have a lot more potential, but maybe it has shown some flaws that only yota guys would know about. Maybe it doesn't have the aftermarket parts available for it, maybe it doesn't have proper adapters to mate with your favorite trannies and tcases.

Ah c'mon, I wouldn't call it "trash". It's a good motor, and reliable. I like mine, but it's not a real powerhouse....

I think overall the 22RE is a better motor. It doesn't have the power/torque of even the underwhelming 3.0, but it holds it's own--and it does so for a LOOOONG time.

Yep, gotta go for the 22RE. replace the timing chain every so often and you're good to go. And from what I've seen, not really that much less power than the V6, and the 4 banger is a helluva lot easier to work on. Mine's pushing 37's with 5.29's and does really well (since the rebuild:D ) and still gets 19 mpg. One of the best motors out there IMO.

'89-'95 had the recall. It was the headgasket itself that was crappy--savvy dealers replaced the Toy headgasket with Fel-Pro ones, that took care of it.

My '94 had it's warrantee work done before it had any problems, and hasn't had any problems since then either.

Sounds about right...our 94' runner blew a motor while on vacation in Oregon. Engines were backordered a month at the time because of the recall. We ended up trading it in on a new 4 runner. They actually gave us the full value for the 4 runner since the motor was covered by warranty. Down side is that they didn't have any leather, 5 speed, etc...to replace it with so we ended up with an auto:mad: but we had to get home somehow.

My 3.0 V6 does pretty well, but the guy that had it before me put a few bucks into it. Rebuilt about 50k ago, electric fan(pulled the mechanical one), K&N system, headers, 2 1/2" exhaust, Flowmaster, etc. It's a '90 4Runner, 5 speed, with 4.88's and 35" MT/R's. It did pull a bit better with the 33's that were on it when I bought it, but I have no real complaints even with the 35's. It'll maintain speed in 5th over the point, and it'll do okay on Pritchett or whatever, even with the stock t-case(although I must note that I have a vast background in the art of 'riding the clutch', as I've been wheelin' with 30-50:1 for a looooooong time:rolleyes: ).
