I can't believe I've forgotten all this, I cant find the web resource I consulted.

Can 4cyl ring and pinion gears be used in a V6 E-locker?

Can V6 ring and pinion gears be used in an E-locker?

Is the E-locker the odd man out?
I'm not asking about the 8.4" Taco non-elocked sets but the 86-95 V6 sets.

I really spaced all this....thanks!

E-locker is V6, setup kit is different but ring/pinion are the same.
4 cylinder ring gears are 'thin' and can be shimmed for use in V6, V6 is too thick for 4cyl

Yes! :D

The 8" E-locker takes standard V6 gear sets. 4cyl gear sets can be used in a V6 housing (including the E-locker) with proper shimming.

THANKS GUYS!

Long story short: The '87 is being built and I have 2 E-lockers that want 5.29's stuffed in them.

I thought we had 2 sets of V6 5.29's but it turns out one set is a 4cyl 5.29 set with re-build kit and the other is 4cyl 4.10's...gotta love raffles:D

Will the 5.29 4cyl set be suitable for use up front?

I'll be visiting you tomorrow Kurt and Carl in the near future for the setup!

Carl, the E-locker was pulled from a running '96 4Runner with 150k on it. Can we re-use the bearings? What else do you need/recommend?

You CAN reuse the bearings, it all depends on how good you feel about using 150K bearings. ;) If it's a part-time front end, it'll naturally have more leeway than if it's a daily-driven rear axle, for example.

Now's the time to swap bearings if you're thinking about doing it ever, naturally...

Otherwise, you'll need a new pinion seal, crush sleeve or solid spacer, and pinion nut. I have plenty of shims and stuff. For that matter, I'm sure I have a pinion nut too.

YUP, part time front end. Pending inspection, I feel ok about them.

What are your thoughts on the 4cyl 5.29's up front?

I'd run 'em. In fact, there are 4cyl 4.56's in the rear end of my little Willys. I've also run 4cyl 4.10's in the E-lockers in a buggy I used to have.

John the 4.10's are leftover from when Carl did my 82. I think the other 5.29 may have been used on my elocker for the runner project.

I got my E-locker dropped of to Carl for some 5.29's. The 4Runner is finally coming together...probably time for a build thread.

I'm not sure you're correct...I only received one third member.
