Toyota steering box swap?

I have an 81 cj-7.
I am doing a crossover steering setup using a IFS toyota steering box.
My question is, does it matter what year toyota i pull the box from ,as long as its IFS.? Is one year better than another?
Any info is appreciated.
Thank you.

Any year 86-95 IFS truck or 4runner should work great. There are two styles and aside from looks the only mechanical difference is the ratio on the later ones as they steer quicker. It is not a big enough difference for me to say one is better than the other though...

I don't know if it will be good for your application, but I prefer the flat pitman arms :)

I have never heard of this. What possible advantage could there be to replacing the saginaw box with the toyota box.

Make sure before you get the box that you know whether you want the pitman arm in front of the box or trailing behind it. An IFS box pitman arm trails, so you have to put it as far forward as possible. If you get a box that has the pitman arm in front (like an FJ60 steering box) you don't have to mount it so far forward. Depends on the fitment and where you want to put the box.

Only thing I can think of is that it is mounted outside the frame...?

I googled the toyota box and looked at some pics. Looks and mounts up a lot like a scout saginaw box right? The Chevy truck boxes also mount outside the frame and would have to be much beefier.

The Chevy box mounts completely outside the frame, the Toyota (and Scout) have the main "body" of the box on top of the frame, with the sector shaft on the outside.

I don't see why you'd want one on a CJ, but they can/do work well in other applications--obviously Toyotas, but it's also fairly common on Early Broncos.

Any Toyota part you can put on a Jeep will definitly help your Jeep:D You don't see any Toyota guys putting Jeep parts on their trucks though. It would be a curse:D

I'll trade a toyota box for a jeep box. THere is something wrong in my mind about transplanting something from another country into a jeep.

Is it because you know it will outlast the Jeep?? How many Jeeps are out on the trail wheeling with 200K+ miles on them???? My mom has a 04 Cherokee that never goes offroad and she has dumped over 3k into so far this year, and now threw a rod. But my dads 93 Toy has 180k and still running like a champ:rolleyes:

My scrambler has 195,800 today and It's clean. Runs the best it has ever. I think that rigorous maintenance is a learned behavior for anyone owning a foreign vehicle. Mostly due to the cost of replacing that neglected part.
