Can anyone give me a little input on this?
I currently have a '99 F350 supercab powerstroke. It pulls good and is paid for, but I'm really wanting the better ride quality the GMC's and Chevy's give. I tow a 30' TT which weighs 7500# on the axles and 800ish# on the tounge. Ususally I put my two ATV's on a truck rack in the bed too.
Over the past weekend I went on a trip with a friend who has an '05 crewcab 6.0 GMC. He has nearly the same trailer. He was able to pull just as fast as my chipped diesel or sometimes faster (I had to keep the EGT's in check) and when we fueled up, he acutally used 4 gallons less in fuel (I didn't have the ATV's this trip).
That made me think why keep the stroker? Sure if I plan on putting 500K miles on it the diesel is the better way to go, but since I bought it new in '99 I only have 80K on it now. Also I need a crewcab since a baby is on the way and the supercab, I think, is just too small.
I hooked his truck to my trailer and went for a test run. It pulled just as good as my stroker(on mostly flat ground), but the ride quality was super! The stroker rides like a one ton truck vs. the GMC that rides like a car.
It may not be a fair apples to apples comparison because I'm running a level kit and 315's vs his stock with 245's, so a tire down size would bring the power back and keep the EGT's in check, as well as some mileage, but the Crewcab and ride quality I can't change.
Long story short; I'm thinking of trading for an '04ish crewcab GMC or chevy 2500HD 6.0 I have to go to the used market because I can't afford to go buy an '07 Dmax/allison (which I would LOVE to do :bow.
Will this be a mistake?
Anybody want to buy a stroker? Depending upon what the salesman says tonight I might be taking offers.
Thanks for the advice!
