tranny shops - is there a good one?

I want to have my tranny and engine in my Acura Integra done. I was thinking that while they had the tranny out, I could pick up a Jap motor and have them put that in at the same time.

Thoughts? Anyone know of a good place to get the tranny rebuilt and put in a new engine at the same time? Warranty is also VERY important, as I'll be driving this thing about 50-60k miles a year.

Not sure if they do the small stuff (I assume they do), but I just picked up a 700r4 from J&G Transmission, so far it has been great, and their customer servive was great too!

Where are they located? I'll give 'em a ring! If you have a number, that would even make it easier! :)

I'm hoping to find someone close (Pleasant Grove), but if I have to do I'll take it down to SLC....

I've had Gary Groves at PRTC in Provo do 5 different trannies for me. Every one of them have been exceptional. I also know that last time I had him build me one, about 2 years ago, he was driving an acura, so he probably knows them pretty good. He also does a lot of custom work for racing, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Is that PRTC Performanace Products on 1520 N State? Don't know the place, but that's what came up on Yahoo when I did a search. :)

If so, I'll stop in there tomorrow and talk to him! Should I mention you?

you can get cheap slitly used b series motors with less then 40k on them from japan for cheap. more power... but i would check them out first. never been there but herd good things. the reson they are have less then 400 k and from japan is becaouse in japan they have to replace the motors and 40k to be legal. so they shipp it here for all the ricers! just what i herd....

PRTC... :ugh:

After my experience, I'd *never* recommend them to anyone.

Oh, maybe I've just been lucky. They did the tranny's on both my camaro's, my Dodge van, the tranny and transfer case on my jeep, and the tranny on my Dad's Toyota truck. Every one was done in a day or two, and at a pretty good price. Haven't had a problem with any of them, and started going to them about 10 years ago. But then again, you never know, I really could just be lucky. Plus it's been a few years, so quality could have changed. What happened with you Greg?

I VERY highly reccomend Trans-A-Matic out here in Magna. The guys are very knowledgeable (even to our needs as rockcrawlers) and they are quick too. Best of all they were the cheapest place around. I was EXTREMELY happy with my rebuilt 350 from them.

If you want just a general mechanic then I have a guy I use occassionally and my parents use for any of their car problems. I can get his info if you are interested. He's very honest and very reasonable on his pricing.

That's where I was thikning about goign for the motor, jap exchange. I hear you can get a complete long block for about $500. That just about makes that a no brainer ;)

As for a general mechanic, not so much. If I was going to use one, I would dot it myself and save the $'s. I want a warranty on it so I never have to worry about it again. If I was goign to do it myself, I would pick up a junker tranny and rebuild it, then just swap engine and tranny one weekend. If I can't find a reputable shop with a warranty I like, I may do that anyway. At least then I know what was done to it....

I knew the owners son & nephew, worked with the nephew. Thought PRTC would be decent to work with, since I was friends with his family.

I had a $500 TCI Converter that came apart on me right after install. TCI wouldn't warranty it, so I got with Gary about rebuilding it. He quoted me at $150-200, AFTER cutting it apart & looking at it. He had the converter for over 3 months! Never called me, was never there when I stopped in, etc. This went on for sometime until I finally caught up with him. He rung up the total & it was almost what I paid for it, $450 or so!

I told him what he quoted me, months ago, and he mumbled something about 'f'ing charity' and told me he'd drop the price to $300. I told him he could keep it... :mad2: He said fine, $200. I paid him & took my converter.

That was my personal experience... I also used to work in a shop in Orem & we had a tranny done by Gary. It had issues & he dragged his feet on taking care of them. Again, the car sat at his shop for months without any progress.

Like I said... I'll only recommend that people *avoid* PRTC.

I have had problems with EVERY auto tranny that I have had rebuilt. We're talking about 12-13 years history here.
I would go with a new trans, (finances permitting) or get a used one. Used or rebuilt is a gamble if you ask me. Used should be cheaper, and if it dies you won't be nearly as pissed off.

on my old jeep my trans was going out and i did some research it was only 500 bucks for a new rebuilt tranny from checker auto parts and it had a 3 year 60,000 mile warranty to me thats a great deal

Here we're back to me doing the work... If I'm doing the work, I might as well rebuild it myself as well. Bottom line is I *HATE* working on my own vehicles! :D

I just dropped my rig off down at J&G for a full rebuild. Joey down there has always been pretty straight with me and I trust him to work on my rig. I've wheeled with him a couple times--so we bonded ;)

Actually, I went down there with my old white ZJ that had a slip between 2/3 gears. Most tranny shops (for instance AAMCO who did) would say that I needed a full rebuild bla blah. Joey was cool, took a ride in it, said he's seen that before in those tranny's and that he didn't think it was going to fail for another 10-20k miles. I got another 5 out of it before I sold it, but I thought it was cool he didn't try and get my money.

But he got it today for my dodge :(

VANDALL.

I think Cody is still crying about that repair.
MMM...CTD.....
I know people that have tried every "brand" of diesel on the market, and the Dodge was recently crossed off the list of things to buy. My sources liked the engine, and the ride, but not much else. They said they will be going back to the F**d diesel.
