Any of them I can think of should hold up ok.

Of course, I'm only thinking of the T-series manuals, the TH400, and the the 727/904(?).

My '80 CJ5 had a "weak" SR-4 transmission that was supposed to be questionable behind the Iron Duke 4 cyl. That transmission held up just fine behind a very healthy 400 horse SBC for a couple years. I wasn't kind to that transmission either, it was used hard. Now as for longevity, I can't say. But 2 yrs of constant abuse, broken rear axles and wheelies, that transmission was just fine.

I broke the T-90 behind my SBC 283 on a fairly regular basis. We're talking removing half the teeth on the counter shaft. That's all I know about Jeep trannies.

Im not even sure what trans it is an 83 cj7 stock. I want to replace it with th350 or 400 but I dont want to lose my tera low in my d300. But the adapter is like five hundred and I have an adapter from the 350 to supposedly any cj7 trans and it is only 150. So I don't have another trans or the adapter which means i would probably be into it like a 500-1000 before all is said and done. So best option 1: wait buy trans and adapter 2: but the motor to trans adapter and pray?

t-90's are the exception to the t-series beef. :D They're about the size of the starter on a small block Chevy, so I wouldn't expect them to last.

I was thinking of the T-18, -19, and -176's. :D

If it was me, I'd be running a Th-350, -400, or 700-r4 with an NP241, and just get the trans-to-motor adapter. They are pretty cheap.

But then, you do have the TeraLow.

Thats what I'm thinking I really want a built 700r4 and the adapter to the d300.
But with the possible lay off from work that a little out of range for play toys.

Also whats the easiest way to Identify my trans

...and how many gears, if manual.

A T-18, T-19, T-176 I wouldn't hesitate to run behind a V8. A T4/5 I'd be leery of, an SR-4 I wouldn't bother with despite Greg's success. ;)

Its a manual 5 speed behind 4.2l strait six. I know it's not a t18 cause when I bought it from my brother he was looking at buying a t18 for it. Are there id #'s and if so where?

If it's a 5 speed, it has to be a T5. It wouldn't be my first choice for a "keeper" behind a V8, but there are those who run them successfully.

It sounds like you already have the engine to bellhousing adapter for it? If so, go ahead and use it since it's free--worst case, you break the T5 and do what you probably should have done in the first place, which is a GM automatic with a D300 adapter. :)
