Transfer case won't go into low range

I have a friend who is trying to help a neighbor who's son passed away recently. He had a 92 YJ and the mother needs to sell it to cover funeral costs. It has a problem with the transfer case which won't go into low range. It has a 231 to which someone added a slip yoke eliminator. Could the person who added the SYE have messed up a shift fork or something that might not be too dificult to fix ? or should I try to help them find another case ? or tell them to sell it as is ?

Could it just be that the linkage is out of adjustment? My 242 wouldn't lock the front axle in on my last trip cause of that.

have you tried rolling forward just a bit while trying to put it in low range?

I put it up on jacks so all the wheels could move then I rotated the drivelines while my friend tried to shift it hoping I could get the gears to mesh. I even disconnected the shifter to see if it was holding things up but the shifter moved freely when it was disconnected from the tcase. I guess I shouldn't have gotten rid of all those 231 cases I had laying around.

Often in my YJ i have to roll ahead slightly or get the rig to move a bit to get it to go in. Mine has the SYE of course i don't recall if it always did that or not...

DaveB, that is the easiest t-case to work on, I've done a ton of them. If it will help out the family I will take it apart to see what is wrong, if someone can pull it out of the Jeep for me. I'm going down to Murry and the airport tomorrow, so I could pick it up then.

I wasn't able to get it out today so I'll have to see what happens this weekend. I'll let you know when I can get it done. Hopefully this cold I just picked up doesn't get worse.

Thanks everyone, I'll see what I can do to get it out but I'm down for the count today, I hate getting sick for the holidays.
