Transmission Advice

So... Here is the story. I bought a used tranny that was said to be rebuilt prior to me purchasing. From what the PO owner said he never ran the tranny but the PO before him had it in a truck and had it rebuilt not long before parting the truck out. So, I was told the tranny did not have many miles on it before it was pulled after being rebuilt. It looked pretty clean so I believed the guy.

I took it to a known tranny shop in SLC to have some work done. After dropping it off I did a little research and found out immediately I was over paying for some parts. Called the shop back and let them know that I wasn't necessarily happy with the situation. We came to an agreement on the cost of parts. Which I still over-payed but felt it was the right thing to do since he ordered the parts for me. I know, I should have just picked up my tranny and gave him the bird. I am a fair and honest guy though. After that was done I get a call from the shop saying that there was a bunch of metal in pan and my tranny was shot and it would be a grand to rebuild. At this point I feel like I am being taken advantage of and pick up the tranny and bring it home.

I know there is a chance either the PO or the original owner of the trans isn't telling the truth and it was either not rebuilt or ran for a long time after it was rebuilt. That is the chance I took with buying a used trans and I am not upset with them at all. That is on me and not them so whatever. What I would like to know is it possible for a trans shop to really see if something really is bad not based on what the first trans shop told me? Can they diagnose a problem without saying "it's shot and it will cost you a grand to rebuild"? Side note, when I picked the trans up the shop told me "well... it could be the converter too", this lead me to believe he might be covering his own dishonesty. I may be over thinking it but those were my feelings.

Also, I live up in Davis county and would love a recommendation of a good HONEST tranny shop up here.

Intermountain trans in salt lake is the bees knees. You will need a new converter to bolt up to the LS motor anyways, so thats a non issue go to Intermountain and ask for Bob.

I have dealt with Chick's transmission and they were fair, they did a performance rebuild for me and even after it was out of warranty they split the cost of replacing the converter with me.
