Transmission cooling question

Would one of these Derale transmission coolers be sufficient to keep a Trans cool. Or should I just strap a conventions fin type to the radiator.

I'd use that for power steering... for trannies I much prefer the plate-style coolers, seem to hold up to vibration a lot better, and maybe cool better too.

X2. Trannys get too hot. I ordered my radiator with a tranny cooler and will prolly add a plate type sometime before next summer, depending on how it cools.

I had pretty bad luck with the radiators that cool the trans too. I thought that was the way to go, but it kept my tranny too hot. I went to a separate plate cooler, (just a little 6x8 one), and my tranny does mUch better. The fin type coolers are too flimsy, easy to damage for looks and durability and I really dislike the mounting kits that go through your radiator. Lots of leaks from that for me.

I mounted twin plate coolers to my shock towers. One for the tranny and one for the steering. Overkill for the steering, but I wanted to really solve my steering drama.

The thing about running it through your rad is that it helps warm the ATF up to operating temp faster.

But if you over heat it brings the suck to your trans also

Then don't overheat, because that REALLY brings the suck to say... aluminum engines.

I had a transmission guy tell me to absolutely run through the radiator. He knows his stuff, so I comply.

thanks for all the responses. I bought one of the plate type coolers. My radiator does not have trans cooling so we will see how well it holds up.

It is important to run your ATF through the cooler in the radiator, but always back it up with a separate plate style cooler. Make sure you run it through the radiator cooler first and then through the other cooler.

Meat is right, the radiator cooler will help warm up the trans fluid faster on cold starts, which is very important-- autos like to run warm, just not hot. You will probably notice it now that it's getting cold. Cold trannies usually shift super hard and then mellow out once they warm up.
