Trip to the Dentist

I have been having off and on tooth pain for about 2.5 weeks, so today I went to the dentist. You can probably imagine how happy I was when he said I was needed to be the lucky recipient of a root canal. So I got to spend the next hour and 15 minutes in a chair listening to the dentist drill away.

I have to say that the best part is when they heat up the dental probe and put it on the tooth. The smell is pretty cool, but watching the smoke come out of your mouth is even better. All this for the bargin price of $380 and I go back to work.

I'm really not familiar with those crowns. They sound cool, but this tooth is pretty far back in my mouth so it might not be too visible.

What makes me mad is that dentist didn't even mention them to me as an option.

Hey i feel for ya... A root canal that i had last december didnt work and flared up on me a couple of weeks ago... I looked like a lop-sided chipmunk and it was a crappy experience.... so i had to get my crown drilled through and the root canal re-done.... but i did get pain killers so it helped me through :)

just kidding...

BTW... I think that sometimes Dentists do stuff to your mouth when you dont need it....

Okay, so I went back to the dentist today to get "fitted" for my crown. Little did I know, the dentist still had a bunch more grinding to do. After about 25 minutes he has my tooth widdled down to about the size of a snow pea.

Then, he has to stuff a piece of string between my gun and my tooth so that they can get a good "impression" of the tooth for the crown. That was not an enjoyable experience and my gum is still mighty sore. For some reason I don't remember that part from my last crown. Now I have a temporary crown and have to go back the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to get the "real" crown put in place.

The worst part came when they told me what the bill for today was. Another $380 in the hole!!! I'm thinking I would have been a lot further ahead just to have the whole tooth yanked out.

Trust me......unless it's a tooth you don't use at all (way way back) you want your tooth. I had one of mine yanked and wanted a replacement (bridge) and that set me back about $g. It's all a rip off. Oh, and I hear ya about the gum pain. I got a crown on Monday and it's still hurts today. And when they cement it in, the clean up the dry cement around it, that ain't no picnic either...... not to scare ya. :D Just go to your happy place........I do.

So, almost two years later and today I was back in the dentist's chair because I've been having pain in the same tooth. The dentist that did the original root canal moved out of state, so on a recommendation from my sister I picked a new dentist.

Apparently my tooth had started to fill with infection, which was what was causing the tooth pain. The dentist drilled through my old crown and then buried the drill bit into my tooth about a dozen times.

The best part is before he started he said, "There's not much left of this tooth, so you shouldn't need to be numbed."

He was mostly correct, the pain didn't last long, but it was pretty intense. He told me it was good that there was some pain because it meant he was getting the bad stuff out. Anyway I get to go back in a couple weeks and they will fill in the hole they put in the crown.

Root Canals Suck.

Our new theory is it's cheaper to pull it than it is to deal with the infections and redos that seem to happen more often than they should.

When I first had pain in this tooth, I thought having it pulled was the best way to go. Then, everyone and their dog told me I would regret it, so I went ahead with the root canal.

If I'm ever in the situation again, I'm going to give some serious thought to just having it pulled.

Dude, we must go to the same freakin dentist. j/k I went in for a root canal Monday and mine told me the same thing. I wonder how pain can really ever be a good thing?
