So we had a rig die on the way up MEG today, it would crank but not fire. After checking all the fuses good, we pulled the wire between the ignition coil and distributor cap, and couldn't get a spark off it. So we pulled the harness plug from the other side of the coil, and couldn't read anything over a volt while cranking on either of the terminals inside the harness plug with a multimeter - we tried grounding straight to the battery, and we tried grounding to the body, no dice. We were sure we had a fault between the fuse and the coil.
After mucking around a bit more, one of the fellas reached in and tapped the dist cap, and the truck fired up. The trouble was dirty contacts, there was nothing wrong with the coil or power supply. Now we're confused, should we have been able to read 12v going into the coil while cranking the engine?
The rig was a Jeep Cherokee, I have no idea what motor. Hopefully Daniel will chip in with more details, if they're relevant. We're all just very confused and would like to know what went wrong in our trouble chasing.
