UHMW boat side???

I just went to laird plastics and got all the material for my buggy skins and my UHMW for the boat sides on my buggy. My question is will the UHMW be strong enough alone (1/2" thick) or do I need to weld something like a 1/8" steel plate all the way along the boat sides then bolt the plastic to that?

I'm thinking it will be strong enough, especially if you have some bracing spreaders in there behind it. It might hold it's shape better over time with some sheet metal behind it though.

I did my skid plate with this stuff and it's plenty strong but i bolted it to aluminum to help it keep it's shape. Agree 100% with Herzog on his comments.

When I had 1/2" UHMW skids and boatsides, they sorta took the shape of the structure underneath--by which I mean you could tell exactly where each tube was behind them, eventually.

Back 'em with something.

What thickness on the polycarbonate? I got quoted ~$80 for a 4x8 of 0.125", unless he quoted me for 2 instead of one. :confused:

I would definitely back it with something. 1/2" cutting board material is going to do some weird stuff after a short while of getting beat up.

X2. I used 3/4" on mine with good success.
