Ujoint play

Is ANY play in a ujoint acceptable? I'm chasing a loud clacking in my drivetrain, prox driveshaft speed. It doesn't do it with the clutch in, and it doesn't do it with the tcase in neutral. I pulled the third and will be having Carl check it out for weirdness, and the only other thing I can think would be the ujoints on the rear shaft. The rear ujoint is tight, and there's just a barely perceptible amount of play at the front joint, on the tcase flange.

Definitely the u joint, I replaced it and it's quiet as a mouse. Amazing that such a minor amount of play could create such a ruckus.

did you replace it with a factory toyota u-joint, or an aftermarket one? I hear the tolerances on the aftermarket u-joints aren't right, and they end up causing issues down the road. Just a heads up.

They're not OEM. I know I'm courting trouble, but I'm gambling that by the time they fail again I'll have the equipment to change them myself.
