Anyone have any expierence hunting Chukar out in the West desert? Recently my interest in upland game hunting has been sparked again and am researching hot spots in the west desert.

Are cougars considered upland game? If so, I might be able to show you some hot spots.

I have spent a bunch of time in the west desert, and chukars are not something I have seen much of. Plenty of jackrabbits, coyotes, and doves though.

Not Cougars Chukar

I know of a few places you can flush a few out and I might even be willing to go out if you want :) there aren't a lot of places though

I would love to know where chukar can be found. Probably my favorite game meat of all time, including big game.

does anyone have a good dog to take with? my old mutt has well lost the knack and the puppy isn't trained for hunting at this point in her life.

From what I understand almost all of the west desert mountain ranges are open for Chukar hunting on public land. Steep, rocky, gnarly terrain are good bets for locating a covey. My boss has a beautiful german wire hair pointer and I have access to take him out whenever. I have not hunted over him but based on his reputation is a strong hunter.

you do want a good dog , and be ready to hike all day

ya without a good dog you will never flush them out.. I am playing in google earth to get some coords where I have found them before.. I know the knolls north of Delle (off I80) have a couple of coveys in them.

Last year there were quite a few in the mountains west of Utah lake but haven't been out there much this year and too many idiots target shooting. There was a ton of them west of Nephi along highway 132 but haven't been there in a few years but no one ever hunts them out there.

I have chased them ever since I was a kid and they still make me look like a bad shot. I too would love to find some. We have a good dog who has done well on pheasants but hasn't seen many chukars lately. My son and I have hiked all over many of the west desert mountains this fall and haven't seen any. We have tried the mountains around Grouse Creek, Pilot mountains and others. Last year I found some on the Dugway range but they were the spookiest bunch I have ever seen and flew way before I got close enough.

Best place I have found is the north side bench coming from salt lake to lake point. After you shoot your limit you'll get trespassing onto kennecott land though. The security guards will show up with the highway patrol and even the fish and game (don't remember what they are called here).Lots of chukars up there though. My bro. in law used to go up on the west side and never got into any trouble. I guess its not private on that side, he had some good shoots.

the volcano north of the clear lake waterfowl area has quite a few around it and also the surrounding area around the lake, down there duck hunting their was a guy that shot three of them in the marsh. All that area is volcanic rock and tears up dogs feet so you need a dog that has some pretty tough feet

I'll be heading out West in 2 weeks with some friends. I know for a fact there are some out there. I'm not kind enough to tell though. I want there to be some left for us when we get back out there.
