Utah wheeling with ATs?

Been on mud terrains pretty much since day one that I have lived in Utah.. Building another rig, sort of sick of the noise, quick wearing, poor in snow, etc, from Mud terrains.. I know MTs are great, for example my MTRs were just killer in Moab but for the reasons I just mentioned I am not planning to buy again..

his time I am thinking I will probably go with BFG ATs, for the first time in maybe 10 years.. It will be a DDer that will see some trail time and a few moab trips but reality is it will probably be 97% of the time on road.. So what are your guys thoughts.. I was curious if there are any of you who have gone back to ATs or still use them and swear by them? Anyone have major negative experiences off road because of ATs? Only major drawbacks I can see are lack of lugs on the side for some of the harder obstacles, and in actual mud but honestly MTRs and most streetable MTs usually suck in mud anyway IMO, versus say swampers...

I switched back from MTR's earlier this year to BFG AT's. I've had no problems with them at all. I love how much quieter they are, they don't grab ruts in the road (pavement) like the Goodyears did. I haven't had any problems with traction down south at all with them. I ran AT's on my Tacoma before this as well.

All in all, I'm very happy having the AT's again. :greg:

I'm a big fan of my BFG AT/KO's. They do pretty good on the snow and when aired to 12psi on the stock 7" rims they grab anything. This is my third set and it happens to be the only set that has chunked horribly. I attribute this to wheeling a little too hard at 35psi. I got 35,000 out of my last set and I still had 5/32"! Costco has great deals and will special order any BFG tire.

I used to run the BFG ATs on my FJ40. I was always impressed how they stuck to the rock down in Moab. I guess they just have a lot more rubber on the rock than MTs, with the smaller voids.

You won't be disappointed in the A/Ts. They are better than the BFG mud terrains in everything but the mud. The MTRs are a little better on the rock like at little moab but they are nowhere near as good in the snow and ice as the A/Ts. The BFG A/Ts are probably one of the best tires on slickrock. I have 48,000 miles on my recent set and they still have 1/3 the tread left and the MTs I've had wore out around 35,000.

i've found the ATs are great on slick rock, and descent on loose rock and suck in mud (as to be expected). The biggest downside for me is, the lugs aren't separated enuf so on steep loose inclines they have a hard time grabbing, they act much like "slicks". I like a MTR or MT would do better in this case.

I've aired down to 8PSI on 15x7 (33x10.50) with no problems.

BFG ATs are a great tire. Like everyone has said above they are hard to beat on slick rock and are much better on the street than anything else a wheeler may consider. I've had 3 sets on different vehicles and always been happy.

That being said a friend of mine just went from the same size BFG ATs to BFG MTs. We went out wheeling at the B Saturday and he said he was never able to do a few of the climbs we did with his old ATs.

Ran through two sets of AT's on my Tacoma on all sorts of terrain... great tires especially with the amount of road/offroad use they got.

i do alot of northern utah wheeling and i have found that the BFG MT's work alot better compared to the AT's but i do have to take into consideration that the AT's were on my Cherokee and the MT's are on my TJ

I LOVED mine on my old XJ, awesome in the snow, cleaned right out. They are a little skittery on the loose, gravelly hardpack around here, but I'm not sure that anything at street pressures would do better. They last long enough for the price, too.

In fact, I'm still getting miles out of MBryson's set LOL
