vehicle advice needed

Got a question for all you. I am looking for a truck/suv for moderate off-road use, but one that will also need to haul the kids, camping gear etc. My question is this, if I go with a full-size rig, am I going to regret the extra width?

Right now I drive an 01 Cherokee Sport (which, by the way, I need to sell if anyone is looking) and the larger SUVs are a foot or more wider. I all ready scrape both sides with brush at times as it is, but with three kids, space is critical.

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks,

Drew

Go with a Toyota 4Runner...room to haul the kids and quite a bit of gear too. Surprisingly they do have more room in them than the cherokees do, and for moderate wheeling they will take you where you want to go without alot of modifications.

You can fit 3 kids in a 4Runner? They seem kind of narrow to me.

I'm thinking a Durango or full size (K5 Blazers are cheap, very easy to modify, and have a PLEATHORA of parts to add) with fuel injection would be the way to go.

Series one Disco, SE7. Seven seats, fuel injected, perfect for moderate off-road, and plenty of aftermarket stuff to add on.

I don't think that a full size would be advantageous because of the extra vehicle mass, esp with gas prices at the current time.

I would say go with either a 60 or an 80 series Land Cruiser.
The 60 will hold 5 people and gear, the 80 will hold 7, or fold up the rear seats and 5 people and gear. You can get a 94 or 95 fzj80 with 100K for 8 to 10
thousand. 100K is less than 1/2 life of one of these rigs. You can get them with OEM electric lockers. With just a little work they will do much more than moderate wheeling. I have seen 80's go places that I haven't wanted to take my fj40.Economy? well expect about 13 to 14 mpg.
fj60's, You can pick them up for 3 to 5 thousand, and they are just as tough.

OK, the difference in price between say a NICE '91 Blazer/Jimmy full size ($4500 or so-add about $100-500 for a cheap 3/4 truck for an axle swap) and a Disco will buy a LOT of fuel.........4" lift for 35" tires.....add a detroit to the 14 bolt and you can wheel.

Hell yeah, you can fit 3 kids in a 4Runner no problem, unless they have serious weight issues. I put 3 in mine, and 2 of them are in car seats. The 'Runner will get close to 20 mpg too. Tons of parts, very reliable, and much better to wheel than a full-size. Plus they weigh less than a Cruiser.

 Cool. They just seem a little narrow for that. I don't have a lot of personal experience, so I'll have to trust you :D. I'd never dispute the reliability and easy modification factor of a 'yota. They are simple, reliable machines.

You can get 95-96 disco's for 5000-6000K, install a 4" lift and 32's and your set.

DUDE!! You of all people know that when you drive a station wagon you carry all sorts of spares!! But yes, most car part places don't have LR parts.

Thanks for the ideas, keep 'em coming. Anyone have specific thoughs on either Toyota Sequias or Dakota Quad cab? Before the Jeep I had a Durrango and am thinking I should not have given it up.

How about the new Durrangos? I can't help but wonder if they have become to geared to the street use.

New Durango = Minivan w/ a hemi. Those things are ugly!!! But to each his own I guess. I think their axles are reasonably stout though.

You want IFS? if so, tons of choices. Alan T has a durango w/ bodylift and 33s, also has a rover, is getting rid of both and putting an engine back in his 4runner.

agree on the '93 to '97 80's, way cool, factory front and rear lockers.

3 kids in the back of a 4runner, 2 in seats? Wow. havent' btdt, just surprised.

I've had a hard-on for a blazer again (new style) for a few years, 35's, 14sf, govlock, for a dd/explore rig, but there are places that I wanna go that it'd be too wide, most places it'd be ok. In fact, that's what I intended to do when I bought my current burb, to do a lot of exploring/mild wheelin' but I don't wanna scratch the paint or beat it so I haven't 'cept for a few trails.

Well, I run a fullsize Bronco. It has yet to fail to go anywhere in Utah or Colorado I've asked it to go & I have less than $10K total in it. Yeah the gas mileage sucks, it gets about 13-14 highway, but everyone always asks me to haul some of their gear because I'm the only one with any room. I can't begin to tell you how many times some dumbass has told me my rig is too big for this or that only to have me prove them wrong. Others are always glad to see me when they need a tow too. You could get a later model Bronco with the OD auto tranny or get one with the 5 speed manual & expect better fuel mileage. I have a buddy who has one with the 5 speed & regularly gets 16-18 highway mileage.

A fullsize Blazer would be a good choice IMO as well. Pretty much the same as a Bronco but somewhat cheaper to modify & already has a solid front axle.

A side note on fuel mileage, I led a trip through Canyonlands NP into Beef Basin a couple of months ago. With me was a TJ & a toyota PU. I was the only one who didn't have to add additional fuel to make the complete trip, and ironically I was the only one who was carrying extra fuel. I put 5 gallons into each of the other vehicles & the TJ still ran out just as we were coming into Moab. I may get poorer fuel mileage, but I can still go a hell of a lot further than most 4x4's on the fuel I carry.

Good points, and that was similar to my experience with my '85 bronco and '74 blazer, after growing up in a '75 blazer.

My scrambler w/ full-width has basically the same footprint as a bronco/blazer. However, some of the places I've taken it, I was glad the body was not as wide as the tires, and where it didn't fit on the trail, I could go over stuff or didn't care if the tires went in the ditch, etc.

In my burb on the dugway down into June's Bottom on the Green, I was TOO WIDE...we made it, but with some nasty spotting and tires on the edge. Maybe a shorter wheelbase would have helped, but the width was the main problem. Taking my jeep, which is actually wider than the burb at the tires, I'd just mash the tires into the rocks and uphill side since I wouldn't have to worry about the sheetmetal. Yota 80's that were on the trip with us didn't have a problem.

It is funny though, that a lot of rigs are built into what blazers and bronco's already are . Put on 33's, add lockers, and go. If you want 35's, add 4" lift...regearing is still optional.

Reminds me, I have a friend that bought an '87 blazer, put 33s on it, 3-4" lift, a lockrite in the back (and maybe the front) and has driven it daily, hunting, camping around the state, and to Moab a couple times a year for about 8 years now, no problem. No, he doesn't take it on Pritchett or Constrictor...but that's not what it's for.
