VoIP providers?

I'm about ready to find another solution for phone. Anyone got any input on VOIP?
Vonage?
Packet8? (I believe they have gone to business only)
Ooma?
something else?

They had a Ooma device on woot the other day and it looked like it had positive reviews, cheap monthly fee, and you could plug a regular phone into it.

I used to use packet8 and was very happy with them. It does look like they've gone business only though. My parents have been with Vonage for years, like probably 8 years now, and they've never had any problems. I haven't looked at voip providers since I had packet8 so I'm unfamiliar with Ooma. I currently have Comcast voip but only because my service is cheaper with it, then without it. No need for a home phone :D

Yea moving away from Comcast is the reason behind this. I'm tempted to just drop the landline and go cell phone.

I don't know how the pricing compares but my co-worker has one of these and really likes it.

Hmmm A cell phone I can plug my rotary phone into :greg: for some reason I'm thinking it would be about the same price as a cell phone.

We've been using Vonage for a couple years without any real complaints, other than "it get's kind of spotty if you're downloading stuff", but that's probably mostly because we have sh*tty Qwest DSL.

Well, that's a side effect of not having enough bandwidth. So yes, due to your crappy qwest connection but will happen on any connection if you don't have enough bandwidth.

If you want to keep your home number, my brother ported his home number to a cell phone line. That way the number that many people have known for years, is still theirs and their kids didn't have to try to learn a new number.

Agreed.

Vonage really has been great though. We had a virtual number for our east coast family members so they wouldn't get charged long distance. :D It's also nice to be able to download voicemails as mp3's.
