ARRRRRG.....

My girlfriend recently purcahsed a 90 Golf GL, thought all i needed to do was throw on a few door handles and replace the rear sturts. No biggie right?

Her and I drive it up to layton freom Sugarhouse to my parents and the battery light comes on. Im thinking no biggie maybe the alternator went out. Its right on top of the engie eay to swap out. She only paid 600 for a 1500-2000 dollar car. So no sweat.

Get up- to layton throw on the struts, throw on a door handle. Pop the hood to check it out, and two belts are gone. Im thinking Oh a belt broke, AWESOME~ We go to Autozone the next day buy all new belts ( 3 belt system) I throw em on ( with a few broken bolts) Drive down the street, light comes on. Im thinking battery is just charging up and it will go out.

Get back to parents house, it threw the long belt of the three. I thought it might be loose. Pull it back in put the belt on tighten it up to proper tension. Drive down the street and light comes on.. threw the belt again.

Now dont know if any of you are familar with this engine. It has Power steering, AC, all that stuff. I am thinking one of th pulleys isnt lined up so I look down and I see one of the middle pulleys off about a 1/4" front the crankshaft one. I call my sister who drives a 89 jetta (same engie) she comes over and I look at her pulley and its about less of an 1/8" off.

Its the pulley on the water pump, but there is another belt running from the crankshaft pulley to it on a outside puelly lext to the one that keeps coming off. So no worries about it not getting water.

Anyone here ever have this problem or know how to move the pulley out on this engine? Pull out the water pump and see if i can shim itout 1/4 of an inch?

Also the Oil pressure light comes on soon as you accelerate from standstill and makes a awful buzzing noise. I replaced the Oil sensor above the oil filter and still comes on. Car doesnt leak oil, has great compression and runs really well ( cept for the damn PS/WP/ ALT belt. Not sure what else to look at

I have a haynes manual and it doesnt say JACK about the drivebelts.

Anyone know a good website for volkswagens with a forum similiar to this? or know Water cooled engines like this one?

id appreciate any help

I once had a truck that would eat the serpantine belt within 5 miles. someone had swapped the power steering pump and didn't get the pully on all the way, I smacked it with a hammer and it fixed it. there is a pully installer for my application, maybe for yours too.

The belts were all new, and the pump I couldnt really tell. I didnt look right at it. But If I remember correctly it didnt look really dirty, The water pump has two pulleys on it the outer one lines up perfectly. We drove the golf about 15 miles in town. No battery light we hit the freeway and in about 5-10 mins the battery light comes on. But now with the new belt its throwing it as I drive down the street. I wasnt sure how freaking tight to make it tho.

Im hoping removing thw water pump doesnt make me take off the Alternator and AC compressor.

( well not sure if belts are new, but they were not original)
