Wake The Hell Up!!!

Hearts and Minds:

Without knowledge to the contrary lies become the truth. This is the problem that faces the off road community.

When I wake up in the morning I read. I read every article that has any notion of a public lands issue. And I have come to believe that the war or words is being lost, lost big. And it is OUR fault.

We all know the cards are stacked against us. We all know that 20 years of brain washing and manipulation have turned the average person into a uneducated pseudo-envirmentalist. The truth as been gone for too long. The truth is our... no YOUR responsibility to spread. If not you who?

The last time I checked a revolution was started by a small group with core values that prompted action. It is easier then ever to start a revolution. Public perception is at the heart of politics, policy and truthieness. (yes I stole that from Colbert)

Our voice has been quelled by inaction and apathy. We labor in anonymity for countless volunteer hours and still the public does not see the truth of the situation. Why? Because we.. YOU don't defend our position. WAKE UP!

The best way, the only way to make your voice heard is to SAY SOMETHING! This was reinforced tonight to me by the Tribune. An article about a poll of 70 people who "a little more then half" responded that OHV use was "out of control" prompted a headline of "FEDS say OHV use is out of control". Now how many people are going to read past the headline? Would you?

Knowing that the Trib is telling everyone that will listen that YOU are unethical and cannot be trusted? Would that prompt you to spend 10 minutes a day responding to these outrageous charges? It should. And I for one have had enough.

I have had enough of the lies and manipulations. The denominations and out right flame fanning. And more then any of that, I have had enough of INACTION and APATHY! The fight is now folks. WAKE THE HELL UP AND GET A VOICE! Every time you bite you tongue, sigh and turn the page or don't have time to respond another lie becomes truth.

I don't know how exactly to stress the situation enough. YOUR inaction, silence and apathy will end our freedom. Can't you feel it? Can't you sense the shrinking feeling?

Read the articles. Post your comments. Be accurate and positive. Take the moral high ground and lets call the extremists out. If there are 20 comments on a article we need to make 15 of them. Honest, level headed, non-derogatory comments can make lies twiddle. Its up to you.

and no, the rant is not off. I am pissed.

The noob is strong with me, but help me with this. When you say I need to comment; are we talking about writing the editor or commenting on a paper's online equivalent? I know either is better than nothing, but which have you found to be most effective and worthwhile?

The only thing worse then saying nothing is sounding like a complete moron. I am of the opinion that some of these "pro atv - envrio bashing" comments are staged. Nobody is as arrogant and inflammatory as some of these jerks. Reason and logical comments need to prevail.

It is crazy how bad we look when the comments that look to be in favor of ohv use come off as fringe and crazy. Post up to these articles and show people that we are normal folks with vaild points of view.

There was a blurb about this on NPR tonight. Only heard a breif moment of it, talking about stiffer fines for those that go off trail etc. USA-ALL saying stiffer fines will not solve the issue etc. What pissed me off was the guy I believe with the forest service saying that "not all OHV users are in the wrong just most" something to that effect.

Edit....trying to find the audio on NPR's website.

I have long disagreed on this. If the fine for off-trail travel was $10,000 (and it was even occassionally enforced) then I think people might start paying attention. I'm all for an increase in fines.

i concur.. what'll wake you up more? a slap on the wrist? or a kick to the face with a steal-toe Kodiak work boot?

think about it.

if the word got around that people were getting massive fines, having thier vehicles taken, people will get the clue that this is f'ing serious! the state is being selfish by not allowing the opportunity for the land abusers to be abused by the consequences of their actions that they chose to make. is that not selfishness on the part of those who should be policing? grow a back bone, and do what you gotta do.

i really do believe that if there were stiff, stiff consequences for abusing the public lands, word would spread, people would fear.. lands would thus be protected by the fear..

I think we need to start posting ads about the good things we do as a community promote ourselves let who ever wants to respond to the things we have said respond why do we need to always play catch up and defend ourselves by responding to everyone elses negative comments about us. its time to become proactive and quit being reactive. :D

Did anyone catch in the article on Canaan Mtn how Jim Crisp said things that were outright lies, along with Liz Thomas giving the usually SUWA pravda.

How do they get away with this? Why can these people say things that they know are lies and have the media print if as if it was true?

We need to write letters. Letters to the Editor of these papers. If the trib wont print ours, send it to the Desnews. Send them to the local papers, they are always looking for stuff to print. It doesn't have to be a long letter, but we HAVE to tell folks that we are right and we stand to lose our land access rights if we remain silent. I recently have gotten tired of arguing with the asshats who routinely comment on the trib articles, but maybe I need to get pissed again and post more comments.

I agree more people should write letters to the editors to get our side out.

If I had $5 million dollars I could make this all go away.
