I don't think it'd heat a pie iron enough. I just boiled 2 cups of water in about 4 min, which is faster than my stovetop at home. It's great for coffee, hot chocolate, ramen, and things like that, but it's not exactly a huge flame. I would imagine these would be prohibited if an open flame is prohibited.

A rocket stove, on the other hand, would heat a pie iron nicely.

Any experience using a stove such as this to cook with a pie iron? Seems like a great option when fuel is limited and/or open fire is prohibited.

I'm thinking that wouldn't work well. They'll get hot enough to boil water in a sierra cup or something similiar, but cast iron is a lot of mass to get hot before you can cook your food. Even if you could do it, it wouldn't be an efficient use of the alcohol.

I'm currently having issues with the vapor seeping out the joint where the two cans connect (the ring around the top, below the holes). I'll have to do some experimenting. I may try glueing one to see if that helps.

sweet. Maybe when brian gets back we'll have a stove/cooking/recipe contest using only our homemade alcohol stoves. Now somebody find me a few aluminum bottles!

Eric, I may have to take you up on your suggestion. I tried looking for these bottles at Smith's and I must have glanced right over them. Are these bottles fairly common?

I'll get some practice making them. I've got the concept and the general design principals down after a couple videos. Probably start with the basic design and start brainstorming ideas to improve on them.

hm... so far nobody has any aluminum bottles. I take it either...

1) nobody drinks beer in aluminum bottles, or
2) they don't want to part with their bottles. :D

But I'm very grateful for the big alum cans you guys are saving for me.

Just thought I'd post this up. I'd never even heard of these so called soda/beer can stoves until this thread so I thought I'd see what I could do in my dorm room with what I could get my hands on over here. So with nothing but what you see here except a sharpie and a piece of paper as a straight edge I made my first one. Sending it to work with my roommate tonight to test it out.
