So a freind of mine (we'll call him Bob for arguments sake)... Is potentially looking for a wedding ring for his girl...

I told him that I had some good buds on RME that always seem to be full of good advice...

I... err I mean he has a couple of questions...

a. What to look for in a diamond... I am fairly versed in the diamond quality standards, but besides the traditional value system, is there somethings to lookout for?

b. SL area jewlers you have had good business with?

c. Metals... obviously she will have some say in this, but are there any substantial likes/dislikes?

Anything else?

When I purposed I used a plastic ring out of a quarter machine. After that I took her so that I could get a ring that she would like. I don't know anything about rings and she has to wear it.

I'm in the same boat, Kurt...er I mean Bob's buddy. :D

We were pretty impressed with the service and selection at Jared's. They are the ones in front of Toys 'R' Us on 5900 and State. In the past, I've always dealt with the Shane Co., and they're also pretty good.

In my opinion, you can get alot more diamond for your money if you look at the S1, as opposed to the VS1. The difference is hardly noticable with a microscope, let alone the naked eye. Concentrate more on color than clarity.
The cool thing about Jared's, is every diamond they sell has a serial number, etched in with a laser, only visible through a microscope. Have them show you one- truly amazing.

As far as metals go, it's a question of tastes. Tara hates yellow gold, so it was white gold or platinum. Platinum is rediculously expensive, so white gold it is. Women concentrate on the stone, not the band. We are putting a $5000 diamond on a $199 band.

As for men's rings, I'm going Titanium. Super tough, nice looking, and only 79.99 :D As opposed to the same ring in Platinum which is $1200.

A good way to go is to get a really nice solitaire..nothing fancy..just a single beautiful stone. That way after you get married( or sooner) she can go pick out the wedding set she wants and then you just put that stone in it. My husband did this, it was a great idea. I was surprised,I had a pretty ring to wear, but then I did get to pick out what I want.
Pay attention to the kind of jewlery she wears now..alot of silver tones..I would get white gold or platinum, if she wears alot of gold get her yelow gold. If she is not a big jewlery person I think white gold is a safe bet, its not as flashy(IMO) as yellow gold.
Just dont shop at the mall....rip off.

I thought we were done with using Bob ans Stella....

Anyway have Bob call me. I pretty sure he knows my #

Anyway, Angies Dad got us a Killer deal on the stone....then your..uh..Bobs fellow cruiser brother at Passey and Sons fashioned up a nice custom setting for us that was designed from a picture of the $40K ring that Angie liked. All for A LOT less. Brian and family can do platinum too. Angies is platinum/yellow gold.

Mine on the other hand is the Hopi ring I wanted from a shop in Moab....Boy angie got off cheap ;)

(just kid'n honey) :hickey:

For what to look for in a diamond the shane website is cool to learn,

I bought Jolenes at Jareds last year... Great customer service, 1 year no interest financing, etc....

don't be afraid to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday and go shop to shop, find what you (errr, BOB) likes, Cut, Clarity, etc and talk to the different shops about meeting or beating the price,

As always, even 4x parts, if you have cash, going through a buddy can save you a TON!

Good Luck!!!

Does Cruisier Outfitters have a Bridal registry? So we can donate to a fund for BOB?

"BOB and Stella are register at Target, Meyer and Frank, and Crusier Outfitters."

Shane co treated uws pretty well. Brenda has a platinum ring, and she wouldn't do that again. It's softer and scratches/dulls easier than gold. not worth the extra money.

I had Alex Jewelers make a ring for my fiance. He was very thorough with detail and my input was sought throughout the process. I had the ring made based off of a Littman Jeweler design, because I wanted a larger total weight and better color/clarity than the Littman ring was offered with. Alex managed to up the total weight from 1.3 to 1.75 carats, and put flawless C/C stones into a handmade setting for only $400 over what Littman was charging. The ring immediately independently appraised for double what I paid for it and my fiance gets compliments on it every day.

I didn't need the financing that you can get from a bigger jewelry chain, so I suppose that might be a benefit to going with Shane Co. or Jared's. But dealing with the sales people in those stores was enough to never want to go back, with them pushing us to look at rings we weren't interested in, to insisting that we get a line of credit with them instead of paying cash. I'm 110% satisfied with how my experience with Alex ended up.

My husband surprised me with my ring. I think that she will really like anything that you get her. I have a white gold tension set solitare. That gave me a lot of options for the wedding band. The only thing that is bad about white gold is it turns yellow and you have to get it refinished every 6 months or so. Platinum doesn't do that. However, like everyone else has said, Platinum is expensive. My husband has a Titanium ring and loves it.

I used Limb Jewelers for my wife's ring. Definitely worth checking out.....They make their own styles and my wife found one she really liked. Pretty unique band/ring combo and she still likes it after this long...........{the guy that gave it to her, that's debateable......:D}

Couldn't tell you about diamonds, my wife didn't want one... strange woman.

We both got Titanium rings, in 97 they were fairly hard to find but lately there have been a lot of nice new Ti rings showing up... It's tough as hell. In 7 years of rock climbing, construction, fistfights, accidents, and other abusive elements, this ring has only barely lost it's shine. By that I mean it's no longer a mirror finish on it.

I have nothing but good things to say about Ti. :D

White gold dosn't turn yellow, but a plated yellow gold ring will turn yellow like you stated. They plate yellow gold with Rhodium to makie it look white. This plating wears off and has to be reapplied.

As for Titanium rings we make these and can get you one hell of a deal on this. Also I have a very, very good connection on wedding rings for ladies (the gold and diamond type). If you are interested let me know and I will do what I can to help out.

I agree with Rckcrlr, Passey and sons, Brian gave me and Raquel a great quote on some rings. Brian is also in Wasatch Cruisers.

There is a small shop, on the outside wall of the mall called "The Time Shop". the owners name is Jeff. Super nice, normal guy. He is kind of the master mechanic of jewerly. Many of the local ring stores know him because they sub contract their repair work out to him. When I bought a ring I went into his store, and he had a little invintory, and lots of books to look through. It was nice, but did not help to pick a ring. The best thing to do is to shop anywhere you can so you get an idea of what you want, then go talk to him, and tell him what you are after. He beat the other prices I had by about 30%. And when I got the final ring in the price was LESS than the quote.
He is a stand up guy.
