Who on hear has welded their front spider gears together? What luck have you had with them? How often do you brake anything on the front end?

I have a frient looking to doing it. He is trying to do some research on them .

Thanks.

Oh ya. It is on a 1980's FJ60 land cruiser.

If its for off road only with hydro assist, it will be fine. It will not turn otherwise. I have done it to both front and rear of the Blazer. No breakage so far.

I have welded the front and rear of 2 broncos one with 37" tires and one with 35". I had no hydro and could barely steer on streets. I would just unlock one hub when on hard surfaces and it works great. I did have a 460 in one of the broncos and constantly broke front axles and joints, and by constantly I mean every time I went out. I did have great luck with the bronco with the 351 though. They both had D44

The previous owner welded up the spiders in my front 60 in the blazer. It still had the stock push/pull steering arrangement. With the hubs locked, I could turn the steering wheel from lock to lock and get absolutely zero movement at the tires. The leaf springs just wrapped up. This was on dirt, too. I went to crossover high steer and it sort of steers now.
I don't know what steering arrangement you have, but keep that in mind. My rear end is welded too and it's kind of miserable on the street. At least a Detroit would unlock every now and then.
I would say no to welding, unless you are off road only with hydro steer, just like everyone else said.
