welding to cast center section

I've got d44's to swap under my zook and need to weld bracket's on for the RRO coil kit that is in the zuk now but I need to weld the link bracket's to the axle on the cast center section.....Will it be strong??? I've welded cast before but nothing really important like holding an axle in place and I dont want to worry if it's going to fail on every wheeling trip or to the store.
I use a miller stick welder and run a 9018 rod when welding cast at least I did on my home brew arm for my ol runner but that was more of a forged steel rather than cast.
Pretty much school me on welding cast specifically on this deal.....Thank's:)

9018 is not the right rod. It may actually be one of the worst rods you could choose. MG 260 is a good choice. Preheat the pig (600 degrees, not red hot)and figure out how to let it cool slowely. The best thing you could do is figure out how not to weld to the cast at all.

I've thought about building a bridge,it could work and give me something to weld to just take some time, but I've got plenty....

9018 is not good to use?I've been told by people from work and a few other's that it will work:rolleyes: :ugh:

I'm aware of the preheat and post heating, but what is my best selection for rod and what is this MG260,wire or rod? I'll have to take a real good look and see what I can do to keep it off the cast But I dont know if it will be possible.....

Roll your eyes but a low hydrogen rod especially a 90,000 psi one is the WRONG rod spend a few dollars for a high nickle rod, or like has been said just don't weld to the cast. It is not that hard to figure out how not to do it and there are even setups you can buy that will keep the welding away from the center.

You know there is a 11018 rod too. If ninety is good 110 would be better right?

Alright.....I was not rolling my eye's at you just to those in my mind that said "it will work fine"......I got your point.
I'll post up pic's of how the link's mounted. After just going and looking there is not a way of getting it off the cast unless I drive straight all day.Thank's for the reply's.

Whether it's correct or not (OK, it's not...), I welded link mounts to my D60 center section with a MIG and normal wire. (ER 70s6 or something? Brain fart, can't remember) Pre and post heat, worked fine.

Same here. Still solid, no cracks 4 years later. :)

me too, but no pre or post heat just weld. Not a single problem.

Can't remember the number but I have used a high nickle rod on cast several times. I know I should preheat, but never have....Just the rod. I do make my brackets with atleast 2x as much surface to weld as I normally would.

As has been said, bridge if you can....even if it is plate welded to the casr and then bractets welded to the plate....by bridging with plate you can get more wels surface to the cast.

I use 7018 to weld cast. It's always worked well. slight pre heat and mild post heat. the big thing with cast is make sure it is super clean no rust, no paint etc. etc. it seems to me to be more sensative then just welding mild to mild. I've welded with a mig before to cast, but I just don't trust it, so I stick to the tried and true stick method.
