My wife just called and told me she took a job in California at the Borax mine in Boron. Population 2000 :)

Now comes the hard part:

-Pack up the house
-Pack up the garage (I figure this will take three times as long as the house)
-Clean the house
-Sell the house (4 car garage in Daybreak if anyone is interested)
-Buy a new house
-Move everything down there
-Fix house just purchased (there is always something)
-Figure out how to get more garage space in new house
-Move all our stuff into house
-Repeat in 3-5 years :)

The first thing I looked at is the wheeling trails around Boron. The Mojave Desert is close by and there were quite a few other ones listed. I will of course continue to lurk on RME :)

Wow, that's going to be a change! Don't be a stranger, you guys will be missed!

I've spent some time working thru the Mojave Nat. Preserve and it's amazing, there are plenty of other exploration options out there as well. Please keep us updated with the trip reports! :D

Congrats Medsker fam! I know you mentioned she could be taking a promotion at another mine so this must mean good news. Stay in touch and invite us out for some Mojave Road fun!

I grew up in Phelan Ca but Boron is out there in the middle of the desert. Good Luck and have fun. I got into jeeping after I left CA so I am of no help. I think I have a uncle that lives there.

I moved here almost 6 years ago from Ridgecrest, CA. Lots of good wheeling in the area, but not sure what is REAL close to Boron, to the south is Edwards AFB. To the west is North Edwards and its little more than a trailerhouse town, lots of people in that area really (REALLY) like to be left alone. Further west is California City and the town of Mojave. Turn north at Cal City and follow the 14 highway up to Jawbone and Red Rock Canyon. Some trails there can lead you further north to Onyx and Lake Isabella. If you go west from Boron to Kramer Junction, turn north. A couple dry lake beds and plenty of trails to stay offroad for the next 45 miles. Ridgecrest area has plenty of trails and is home to the Tinbenders and Gear Grinders clubs. Victorville to the south of Kramer Junction has a couple clubs (names escape me at the moment) and some spend lots of time at Johnson Valley. Offroad, Rally, Rally Cross, and Mojave Offroad Series racing south of Ridgecrest. Trona Pinnacles is not too far from Boron also. It was where they filmed the big final fight in the remake of Planet of the Apes. Living in Boron has a perk, plenty of really cool aircraft overhead. Too bad the Space Shuttle program is dead. Landings at Edwards AFB were really cool. I retired from the Navy at China Lake at Ridgecrest in 2001, we lived there for 8 years.

Wagon Wheel OHV area south of Ridgecrest, east of Searles Junction. This is part of the area they race in for the Ridgecrest race of the MOR series.

Red Rock area north of California City up highway 14. This area is really popular for Thanksgiving camping.

I'll add that weekends get a bit crazy in the desert. Flatlanders coming up from LA with more money and toys than brains aren't concerned about cleaning up after themselves, and act as if they own everything. Makes for bad traffic on two lane highways. Also makes for all too frequent bad times in the desert. Be aware of mines throughout the region, people ride or fall into them all the time.

I miss living in the area and wouldn't have moved if I hadn't lost my job for the second time in 2 years and then couldn't find anything. I lived in California, but I'm not FROM California.

Thanks for all the info. Can't wait to get the truck out and do some exploring. Glad to here people like to keep to themselves because that is how I am :). I will let you all know when we figure out where we are going to move to.
